Motivation can be defined as “the processes that account for an individual’s intensity, direction, and persistence of effort toward attaining a goal”Motivated individuals stay with a task long enough to achieve their goal. Process of Motivation start from Needs (desires or wants), Drive / goal directed behavior, Goal and incentives / reliefs. Basically if individuals need for achievement, need for power and need for affiliation fulfills, then a person may be motivated and persistently work to achieve the goals (McClelland, 1961). Persons will be motivated enough to exert a high level of effort and goal directed behavior if he or she believes that efforts will lead to good performance appraisal and a good appraisal will lead to rewards that satisfy individuals personal goals. Vroom’s expectancy theory (Vroom, 1964) focuses on three relationship and these are Effort-Performance, Performance-reward and rewards-Personal goals relationship. The key to expectancy theory is the understanding of an individual’s goals and linkages between efforts and performance, between performance and rewards and rewards and individual’s goal satisfaction. Now to motivate oneself, it is expected that one should carryout his or her jobs with same intensity and have persistency to perform to achieve the goals. One has to be involved in his job / work with same intensity and effort with same amount of interest. There are lots of factors, which motivates a person and large quantity of research has been done to ascertain these factors, which actually motivates an individual. Some of the motivating factors are job security, interesting nature of work, good working conditions, good wages, promotion and growth opportunities with in the organization, appreciation of the work done etc. To motivate oneself, one has to set and reset goals.
