Eriksons Psychosocial Stages - Essay Example

I have successfully completed the first five stages of Erikson’s psychosocial stages, namely (1) Trust vs. Mistrust (birth to year one), (2) Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt (1-3 years), (4) Initiative vs. Guilt (3-6 years), (4) Industry vs. Inferiority (6-12 years), and (5) Identity vs. Confusion (12-18 years). In stage 1, my parents met all my physical and psychological needs, thus, inculcating in me a sense of trust. In stage 2, my parents gave me autonomy by asking me my preferences in making choices, such as dress selection. In stage 3, my parents and teachers encouraged me in creativity and presenting new ideas, thus, initiating my innovative instinct. In stage 4, my parents encouraged and appreciated me whenever I achieved a goal. In stage 5, I was confused about identity, but my parents helped me pass this stage through communication.

Currently, I am at stage 6- Intimacy vs. Isolation (18 -40 years). I can say that I am at this stage because I am 28 years old. A person of this age is supposed to be social and fun-loving. I plan to develop healthy relationships with my peers and friends. I also would love to get intimate with someone whom I would deem fit as a life partner.  I plan to be productive at this stage.

The next steps include the remaining two stages, namely (7) Generativity vs. Stagnation (40-65 years) and (8) Ego Integrity vs. Despair (65+ years). I hope to complete these steps successfully by settling down, starting a family, and becoming productive (stage 7); and, by appreciating myself as a successful person in old age (stage 8).
