Semantic memory is not affected by the severity of depression in an individual (McDermott & Ebmeier, 2009).
Deficits in the visuospatial memory: This type of memory is employed when someone can recall something that he saw in his environment. It involves storing and retrieving information in one’s environment. Depression has an effect on this type of memory. It is not affected by how much someone is depressed (McDermott & Ebmeier, 2009).
Deficits in the executive memory: Depression may cause impaired memory, poor reasoning, and difficulty in the problem-solving process. The more someone is depressed, the more the executive memory is affected (McDermott & Ebmeier, 2009).
It is a neuropsychological assessment measure that can help determine someone’s behavioral, executive functioning, cognitive, and motor data (Tripdatabase.com, 2015). These data are then used by a neuropsychologist to get information that aids in the diagnosis of the cognitive deficit and in some cases to confirm a diagnosis that was carried out before. The data is also able to provide a guide to the effective treatment methods for impaired patients (Tripdatabase.com, 2015).
NPE enables neuropsychologists to get a clear psychological working of a person. The data obtained by the use of this method should be interpreted by a trained and experienced neuropsychologist because they can easily be misinterpreted. The NPE tests are used in conjunction with information obtained from physical reports and clinical reports (Tripdatabase.com, 2015).
The results of the study have led to neuropsychologists recommending special attention to be given to students who had suffered a concussion at some point in their life so that they recover fully from the injury. The recommendation includes a shorter school day as concussion patients find it hard to concentrate for long hours in class and being given more breaks in the cause of the day when they are feeling the effects of concussion like headaches.
The findings of the study have also led to schools consulting neuropsychologists to assess their students. This is to ensure the student does not suffer untreated if he is affected by a concussion. The students who are diagnosed with the injury are subjected to regular treatments and evaluations in order to enhance proper recovery.
In order to deter those athletes with a concussion to participate in sports, neuropsychologists carry out concussion tests before the sports season starts to establish those that are fit to participate. Students who have suffered the injury are also being advised not to haste their recovery process by overworking themselves when they are not ready. If they do that they are likely to worsen their condition
