A Voluntary Day in the Library - Essay Example

The library regularly opens at eight in the morning. I had made a volunteering request that I had gladly awarded. The chief librarian called for a short morning meeting where we were acquainted with the day’s operation of the library. The newcomers were then assigned the day’s work, and I was allocated to be on the help desk together with the qualified personnel. In the help desk, all library queries were made, and it would involve making quick trips and a few library departments for queries and delivering some files.

The day began well, with most of the library users doing general queries about how to use the catalog and where to find books. I was given the responsibility to direct the clients on how to utilize the library catalog after a quick brainstorming. The experience was overwhelming, watching them return smiles of gratitude and relief when they were, at last, able to locate a book or a resource in the library. It gave a feeling of inner peace and fulfillment to watch them walk away smilingThe day progressed well, with more and more library users coming for queries on the help desk.

I made several inquiries myself to the qualified personnel I was working with in case there was anything unclear to me. In a few instances, I offered to take the library users and help them locate a resource in the library, and one lady, too grateful, said that we should have more like me. By the end of the day, the experience was unparalleled, and fulfilling, and it gave me such great satisfaction to see people have an easier time because of my voluntary work. It gave me the desire to do more voluntary work and it got me wishing more and more people would embrace the spirit of beneficence, to appreciate all the beauty and joy that comes with helping other humans and helping improve their lives. It was a pleasant day.
