Encourage smokers to use nicotine patches Source Sachs, D. P., Säwe, U., & Leischow, S. J. (2000). Effectiveness of a 16-Hour Transdermal Nicotine Patch in a Medical Practice Setting, Without Intensive Group Counseling. Arch Intern Med , 1881-1890. Summary: The aim of this paper is to determine the effectiveness of nicotine patch in order to assist the smokers to stop smoking. It was concluded in the study that nicotine replacement therapy by using the nicotine patch provides an effective and safe treatment to the patients who are dependent on tobacco. The one-year sustained non-smoking rate was also accomplished by simply allowing the tobacco dependent patients to use nicotine patches within the standard medical setting, without the need of introducing any kind of psychological intervention. This method was found as effective as therapies like group counseling and behavior modification. Direct quote: Sustained abstinence was detected at each visit with absolutely no cigarette use, serum cotinine level of 15ng/ml or less after eighteen weeks and level of carbon monoxide of 9 ppm or less was significantly greater in the patients using nicotine patch than the ones being treated by the help of placebo patch. It was observed that in 16 hours minimal skin irritation and no systemic side-effects were observed. Oral Citation: This article written by Sachs, Leischow and Sawe presents the effects and side effects associated with nicotine patches when compared to other therapies used for making the smoker quit smoking. Rationale: This article can be used as an important source in the speech as it defines the effects of using nicotine patch for cigarette smokers. This provides evidence that the use of nicotine patch is not associated with any kind of side effects which may influence the smokers to use this therapy in order to quit smoking. The use of nicotine patch in nicotine replacement therapy has also been compared to group therapies and behavior modification and the result indicates that nicotine patches give more effective results than any other. Source 2 Stead, L. F., & Perera, R. (2008). Nicotine replacement therapy for smoking cessation. The Cochrane Library. Retrived From: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/14651858.CD000146.pub3/full Summary: The aim of this article is to compare the nicotine replacement treatment to placebo treatment in order reduce the motivation of individuals to smoke. The research also determines that whether the effects of smoking are influenced by the form, timings and dosage of use of Nicotine replacement therapy. It also studies the effects of additional support and advice being offered to the smokers and the clinical setting in which they are being recruited and treated. It also helps in determining the success rate of the nicotine replacement therapy while using nicotine patches when compared to using other pharmacotherapies. Direct Quote: An analysis conducted of 187 smokers admitted to the rehabilitation who received the nicotine patches showed minor or no evidence of smoking, when compared to the sample of smokers present in the same data base who did not receive any nicotine patches. Oral Citation: In the article written by Lindsay F Stead and Rafael Perera the authors aim to emphasize on the fact that how Nicotine replacement therapy helps in reducing the motivation to smoke and reduces the psychomotor and psychological withdrawal symptoms in smokers. Rationale: The reason why I chose this journal is because it presents the effectiveness of nicotine replacement treatment when nicotine patches are used to help the patients get rid of the nicotine present in their bodies. The result of this study indicates that after six week of use of nicotine patches absenteeism of smoking was observed in the patients, which is considered to be an influential factor to be included in the speech. In the study the author concluded that all the commercially available forms of Nicotine replacement treatment are considered effective such as nicotine patch, nasal spray, inhaler, gum, etc. and increase a patient’s chance of quitting smoking. Source 3 Pascual, S., Gench, J., Meza, R., & Parra, D. (2000). Antidepressant effect of transdermal nicotine patches in nonsmoking patients with major depression. Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, 387-389. Summary: Research was conducted on non-smoking and non-medicated patients in order to investigate the effects of nicotine patches in treating depression. The patients were provided with 17.5mg of nicotine patches and were then observed for 4 days. The result of the study showed that there was significant improvement in the patients suffering from depression after second day of being provided with nicotine patches. The symptoms of depression were much lesser; 3 to 4 days after the patients were given their last dose of nicotine. However minor side effects were recorded with included loss of appetite, increase in the production of saliva, mild insomnia, etc. Direct Quote A high frequency of smoking has been reported in individuals suffering from depression. Nicotine patches are known for short-term improvement and decreasing the symptoms in the depressed patients. However due to nicotine’s risk to health, it is not recommended for clinical use but it certainly does cure depression with minor side effects. Oral Citation This article provides evidence that nicotine patches treats depression. A study was undertaken in order to determine the effects when the patients are administered with nicotine patches for 4 days. Rationale: This article can serve as an important source for the speech as it highlights the benefits of using nicotine patches in curing depression. Although the use of nicotine has not been permitted in the clinical practice due to its harmful effects on health but still nicotine patches can be used as an antidepressant by the people voluntarily. The study presented in the article has not been conducted on the smoker dependent on tobacco but it does not lessen its effectiveness. Depression is considered to be the root cause of people starting to smoke on the first place; therefore nicotine patches being used to treat depression will be also be treating the smoking habit of the patient. Source 4 Jarvis, D. S. (2013). Nicotine Replacement Therapy. Retrieved October 26, 2014, from http://www.patient.co.uk/health/nicotine-replacement-therapy Summary: The article presents detailed information about nicotine replacement therapy and the use of nicotine patches in making the smokers quit smoking. It focuses on the fact that how therapies like nicotine patches reduce or stops the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal in smokers and also makes you stop smoking after some time. It also presents ways through which smokers may start their nicotine replacement therapy. They can ask the pharmacist, doctors or nurses for assistance while starting the therapy and be aware of the possible side effects associated with it. It also indicates the fact that the use of nicotine therapy for 7-12 weeks will help the smokers to quit smoking for rest of their lives. Direct Quote: The patient will more likely stop smoking when he receives support or counseling before starting with the nicotine replacement therapy. The support and counseling may be provided by the pharmacist, doctor or nurse to the patients before getting started with the therapy. There are several other platforms which may provide support such as phone counseling, internet, tapes, etc. Oral Citation This article provides a detail review about the nicotine replacement therapy, spreading awareness about the possible side effects and also about assistance and support the patients may seek before getting started with the therapy. Rationale: The reason behind using this article as one of the source in the speech is because it covers the topic of nicotine replacement therapy. It does not just explain that procedures and use of nicotine patches but it also highlights the possible side effects associated with the use of nicotine patches. The article provides several other sources through which the smokers may get counseling and support while using the nicotine patches. It also states that a session with the doctor before starting the therapy will increase the chances of the patients quitting smoking. Read More
