The emotional issues teenagers have to deal with include depression, suicide, poor academic performance, sexual abuse, and legal issues among others. The majority of young people who are younger than eighteen face emotional problems that are serious enough to warrant special treatment. More concerns affect teachers and seek the attention of school administrations as well as communities all over the nation. Teenagers’ dropping out of school has been seen as the most problematic of these issues.

The phrase “at risk” denotes an array of behaviors that put an individual in a dangerous position regarding a future negative event. The at-risk teenagers are considered to be those who have a likelihood of dropping out of school and ending their education promptly. Persons who have a multitude of problems and the ones who do not have as many problems face the same developmental changes throughout their lives. Even though the regularity and level of these problems vary, both the low-risk and the high-risk groups have an increased level of deviant behavior in their late teenage and early adulthood years. This means that counselors should come up with proactive efforts that will assist teenagers to be successful in their adolescent years.

Counseling interventions together with other programs become useful when there are increased levels of problem behaviors during the teenage years. Effective prevention, as well as intervention attempts, should be tactically focused in this entire time of teenage growth, particularly in alternative courses that strive to assist teenagers to remain in their schools. Group counseling has been utilized in this age group with different levels of success. The youth have continuously been stressed, but the total number of teenagers faced with these stresses without managing skills is on the increase at an alarming rate. These teenagers continue to face risks associated with failure in schools, chaos in their homes, and trouble at the community level. As a result of this quick increase in knowledge and technical evolution, along with changes in perceptions and conduct, the young people at present experience bigger pressures.

Presently, teenagers are in a hurry to grow up and they do so too fast and too soon making them develop pressure to achieve which is a source of significant stress if they do have the required skills to assist them deal with the evolving world (Leadbeater, 2014). Teenagers are continually getting themselves involved in adult behaviours thus growing up without a childhood. With the increased pressure to grow up fast, teenagers find themselves entangled in delinquency and pregnancies among other issues. The majority of these teenagers are therefore likely to drop out of school while having a very small possibility of developing a suitable set of skills and being fruitful adults.

This study aims at discovering the kind of group counseling intervention that is best suited for teenagers especially those that are still in high school. The study will also assess the presence of any considerable dissimilarities between the sexes about the group intermediation utilized. The research will go further to look at the difference that exists between the interventions in assisting teenagers to abandon their dysfunctional perceptions and replace them with an efficient cognitive methodology for the issues.
