Summary
Burnout occurs when professionals use inefficient coping mechanisms to shield themselves from work-related stress (Montero-Marin, Prado-Abril, Piva Demarzo, Gascon, & García-Campayo, 2014). Burnout is said to threaten the mental and physical health of people hence decreasing…

Stress experienced by professionals has also been a subject of research and a number of scholars such as Antoniou, Ploumpi, & Ntalla (2013) have also examined how it affects burnout. According to Cooper, Sloan, & Williams’ (2004) model of stress, perceived control and coping style are important predictors of burnout. Antoniou et al. (2013) and Bagcesi & Hamanci (2012) also found that occupational stress was a major predictor of burnout among teachers. A questionnaire was administered to 467 lecturers on measures of burnout (burn out or not), coping style (with higher score indicating higher ability to cope with stress) and stress from teaching (with higher score meaning teaching creates a lot of stress for the person), among other variables.

The dependent variable was burnout and the independent variables were coping style and stress from teaching. Given that the dependent variable was dichotomous, a logistic regression analysis was employed. A logistic regression was performed to ascertain the effects of coping ability and stress from teaching on the likelihood that participants had burnout. The logistic regression model was statistically significant, χ2 (2) = 137.015, p < .001. The model explained 37.5% (Nagelkerke R2) of the variance in burnout and correctly classified 80.

1% of the cases. The results show that as the coping style increases, the odds of burnout occurring increases (since the odds ratio is more than 1). On the other hand, increase in stress from teaching led to decreased burnout (since odds ratio is less than 1). The odds of burnout for a person who has a higher coping ability is 1.11 times higher than that of a person with low stress coping ability. The odds of burnout for a person with higher teaching stress is 0.968 times higher than those with less stress from teaching.
