"High Price" by Dr. Carl Hart How does your increased understanding of psychology enable you tocomprehend Dr. Hurts book?Psychology teaches people to make deductions from several angles including observation. The case is the same with Dr. Hart where he insists that the policy makers of drug abuse and even those in the criminal justice system should learn to first make observations and not rely only on other ways to collect data on drug abuse and their causes. Assumptions have been known to be used by the criminal justice system on issues of drug but psychology does not allow conclusions based on assumption but on real evidence from not only one observation or symptom but after a period of close monitoring and surveillance.

The same principle should be applied by the policy makers and other stakeholders when it comes to issues of drugs use and abuse. Psychology teaches about learning through models. People living in poor deplorable conditions, without education or any hopes of future are introduced to drugs being sold almost without restrictions and shame in their neighborhood. What they are taught by the sellers is that the drugs will numb their pain and fear of the future and they see the same effects on majority of the people in the neighborhood.

According to Hart, (2013), as they have nothing to lose, they start engaging in drug use. The abuse and addiction part comes from lack of social models to show them otherwise, instead they are faced with harsher penalties of jail term hence increasing their deplorable conditions and lack of hope in future even more. If only they would have positive role models and be offered a chance in education and properly livelihood, they would not engage in drug use and abuse and Dr. Hart is a living witness.
