A person experiencing a stressful life and showing symptoms of mental degradation is in this case not psychologically fit. About the case study assessment, the mental health of this family seems to be imperfect in so many ways, right from the father to the children. There is a negative perception about life from both sides of the parents, in that they both seem unable to balance life productively without losing it on the other side psychologically. For instance, he was laid off two times; this means he does not play his role as a competent employee. A few months after his layoff, he grows fat; this means he is not concerned about being productive to society and his immediate family. Paul is psychologically unstable in that he is even irresponsible to the extent he fails to groom himself.
The decision by Helen to abandon her children and leave their care under her husband does not solve the issues around their marriage. It shows that both of them are not able to handle the problems around them Helen is also unable to contain her workplace issues with her boss. Children wander around with no attention from either parent. The eldest child has psychological problems as the teachers report, She wets her pants more frequently, which means her mental capacity is failing her; she is not fit to contain her problem.
The symptoms also show in the five-year-old who demands attention by bullying others around him. This shows that the five-year-old does not have a good time at home and he extends the same bad treatment to his peers. The confession that Helen gives reveals the background of Paul’s behaviors, a stepfather bullied him, he does the same to his children and the family is falling apart because of the same. The mental disorders may include; distress or stress, there is a possibility of suicide, Paul was seen carrying a knife, and his mods have changed.
The various models that explain the situation include; the psychoanalytic, attachment model, and evolutionary models (Koutoukidis, 2012)
Model
How the model explains what is happening
Treatment approach using the model
Psychoanalytic
Mental disorders may come from the fact that Paul is receiving too little or too much gratification from the psycho-sexual development stages
The treatment would come by solving the relational and internal conflicts to have a balance in the psych-sexual development stages.
Attachment
This explains the relationship that Paul had with his early childhood caregiver. He scolded him that is why he ran away and developed a mental problem later.
Treatment is found by enhancing the security of both the children and the family the parents have to be closer and try to eliminate the boundary through care and love.
Evolutionary
It explains that Paul`s problem is contributed by factors related to his ancestral physical and social environments.
I affirm that humans carry on a gene legacy and this is a point, which shows the behavior of the five-year-old at school.
The model suggests that the environment plays a big role in a person`s mental health and thus a good environment will help heal the mental problem the family is having
