Institutions like the Centre for Medicare and Medicaid are starting to implement these measures in association with reimbursements. Other private health insurers like United Health Care and Wellpoint are also initiated to tie quality to compensation. So the significance of quality measurement analysts and abstractors, held by many HIM professionals will increase with the progressing implementation of quality standards implementations. Quality measures have been considered as the performance evaluators of healthcare facilities and thus can be used to track their position in the health sector. It’s been explained that measuring quality does improve quality as, after the institution of such requirements by CMS and Joint Commission, considerable development in performance as indicated by the instituted measures has been observed.
So the overall article emphasizes the need of ensuring quality within the health care sector and to accomplish this, one of the critical ways is to implement quality measuring standards and associate the compensations of the health care professionals as well as providers to them. This article discusses the mutual coordination of AHIMA and NFQ regarding the implementation and evaluation of modern quality standards within the health sector. As HIM professionals work on quality measures with the health care professionals.
But with the revolution of electronic standard implementation, more health IT professionals are replacing HIM professionals. National Quality Forum has been established for the same purpose and was joined by AHIMA in 2008, to put its input in the approval process of quality standards for the healthcare industry. NQF is a decisive body for the endorsement and prioritization of quality standards. However, it does not develop measures on its own rather uses committees and voting procedures to scrutinize details of measures and thereby offer approvals before their implementation. Working voluntarily with NQF gives AHIMA members a chance to get involved at serious quality measurement levels and get acknowledged with the position of the industry in this regard.
