Exam 2: Fall Anne’s Case Procedures in Counseling 21 November Exam 2: Fall Anne’s Case A crisis can be defined as the reaction of a person to a situation that causes them to lose their feelings of self-worth in a way that affects their daily lives. In this particular case study, there are many specific details regarding facts about Anne’s situation that have been divulged to the person interviewing her. However, her personal reactions have not been thoroughly assessed or observed. Anne’s feelings about her long-term boyfriend leaving her so suddenly need to be determined in order to decide whether or not her self-worth has been affected.

More than likely, her self-worth has decreased because she has lost her home, her relationship, and her means of supporting herself and has had no time to prepare. Anne’s specific reaction to this event will be unique. For example, Anne might react violently and try to kill her partner. Or, Anne might fall into depression because of the situation. Each person reacts uniquely to situations that happen in their lives. Whether it becomes a crisis depends on their reaction. Anne is now vulnerable in a way that she was not before when she was relying on her partner to support her both financially and emotionally.

People could take advantage of her because they know that she does not have the basic knowledge or abilities when entering the workforce. A potential employer could choose to pay her less than what she is worse because of her lack of experience. Anne could develop trust issues. Because she is panicking and feels like she must take first thing that comes along, Anne might trust anyone who offers to help her even if his or her intentions are to take advantage of her. Or, Anne could potentially go the opposite way and not trust anyone and shut down.

This could not only cause depression but also major mental instability. Potential opportunities that might arise for her because of her situation are that she might feel like she needs to move forward in life and get her act in gear. She could get a job, save money, begin an education, and face her problems step-by-step. Basically, she has a clean slate and could take her life any way she wants to depending on how she reacts to the situation. She could enter a workforce rehabilitation program that specifies in teaching necessary skills to women entering the workforce.

Depending on her location and situation, there could be many community resources that she can benefit from. Given the situation, a simple and effective therapy for Anne would be free association. Basically this is the psychodynamic theory, when the patient describes any thoughts or images that come to mind. From this free association therapy, it can be determined whether the patient only needs standardization talk therapy or more intense medical attention such as medication or positive re-association.

Taking the comprehensive approach would require different treatments. Based on a deeper analysis of how she is feeling, the approach needs to be specified. A comprehensive analysis would take six important domains: behavioral, dynamic, social, cognitive, biological, and spiritual. What is Anne doing? What’s going on beneath the surface? How does Anne relate to others? How does Anne interpret life events? Are medical conditions impacting Anne’s life and behavior? Is religious faith a harmful or helpful resource for Anne?

Once these specific questions regarding the six primary domains of the comprehensive approach have been answered, the unique therapy that Anne needs can be determined.
