The variables discussed are the ease with which a person can fall asleep and maintain sleep in an array of circumstances; individual differences in recalling dreams; sleep-onset problems; an inability to maintain sleep; and the ability to cognitively manipulate sleep and dream functions.

Evans concluded that while the questionnaire can provide substantial insight into what can make or break a good night’s sleep, there is a vital importance to undergo laboratory studies to fully understand how these factors affect an individual’s sleep. As such, Evans proposes various ideas for additional research in the future. A study needs to be undergone to determine if sleep-onset insomnia and sleep-maintenance insomnia are normal manifestations of severe sleep disturbances. Similarly, further study is required to validate the utility of the subjective parameters of an individual’s sleep. Clinical populations will be required to undergo these studies. This information is both useful and necessary as it can increase what is known about sleep disorders and the roles that habits and sleeping abilities play in a person getting a restful, healthy sleep.
