Biographical Sketch of John F. Kennedy Introduction John F. Kennedy or John Fitzgerald Kennedy, popularly known as Jack, was the 35th President of the United States of America. He served the nation from 1961 till 1963, the year he was assassinated to death. Life of John F. Kennedy is full of struggle and high-spirited occasions which truly celebrate the American life and culture. The embodiment of charm and elegance of democratic spirit made Kennedy one of the most popular icons in the United States even after few decades of his death.
A detailed trajectory through his life will definitely help to understand the incidents and course of Kennedy’s life that made him ephemeral and universal entity.Early Life and UpbringingJohn F. Kennedy was born on 29th May of the year 1917. He was born at 83, Beals Street of Brookline in the state of Massachusetts. He was the second son of the couple named Joseph P. Kennedy Sr and Rose Fitzgerald. Kennedy stayed with his family in Brookline for more than ten years and completed his formal education there.
Kennedy was a dedicated student at the Edward Devotion School. He went to Noble and Greenough Lower School along with Dexter School and completed his fourth grade. In the year 1927, his family shifted to New York City and there he passed his fifth, sixth and seventh grades at the Riverdale County School. Kennedy accomplished his graduation from Choate in 1935 June. His charismatic leadership was by that time taken its full form and he was voted “The Most Likely to Succeed” in the school yearbook.
Kennedy could not pass through the medical test for the U.S. Army. And after this incident in the September 1941, Kennedy joined U.S. Navy. He served as the ensign in the office of the Secretary of the Navy. He served as the commander of the Motor Torpedo Boats PT-109 and PT- 59 all through the World War II in the South Pacific. Work and Political Career and AccomplishmentsSince his days in University, he was very much moved by the political scenario and concerns across the globe. He represented Massachusetts’s 11th congressional district as the representative in the U.S. House of Representatives from the year 1947 to 1953.
He was a democrat. After this he served the U.S. Senate from 1953 to 1960. Kennedy defeated Richard Nixon in the year 1960 contesting against him in U.S. Presidential Election. This victory is considered as the landmark in the political career of Kennedy. He is the only president who had the pride to possess the Pulitzer Prize.The short span of Kennedy’s presidential career witnessed many important diplomatic and political events which were very skilfully handled by President Kennedy. Bay of Pigs Invasion, Cuban Missile Crisis, reconstruction of the Berlin Wall, keen race in space science and technology were some important events that were very skilfully managed and handled by Kennedy.
Kennedy diplomatically handled the African American Civil Rights Movement and witnessed the initiation of the Vietnam War. His foreign policy was dominated by the manifestations guiding proxy contests during the first-half of the cold war era. His diplomacy was oriented towards American- Soviet confrontations. He named his domestic policy as “New Frontier” and initiated myriad programmes generating federal funds for education, medical care and treatment for the senior citizens and economic assistance to the remote areas.
He successfully made the government intervention for putting an end to the recession. Kennedy also worked elaborately for putting an end to the racial discrimination.Personal LifeJust after the election of Senate in 1952, Kennedy married Jacqueline Bouvier who was the daughter of a financier in the New York City. In next few years, Kennedy and Jacqueline gave birth to four children. Unfortunately among these four children, only two survived, a girl child named Caroline and a boy child named, John.
Kennedy was a very familiar person and he was always seen associated with his family before the media and this image also proved to be very supportive for the development of his political career.PhilosophyKennedy was a democrat. He envisaged democracy and was a staunch supporter of equal rights for all men in the society. He strongly advocated social welfare and propagated civil right legislation in the senate. His visionary paved a new era for the United States and this was evoked in the thesis bearing the title “Appeasement in Munich” during his university days itself.
The thesis concerned the crucial role of Britain in the Munich Agreement and its mode of participation. This thesis was later published as a book bearing the title; “Why England Slept”. He was a man who believed in the ideals of liberty, peace and equality. For the sake of his vision, he tried to generate and distribute the wealth and federal facilities in shape of myriad schemes among all the classes of American society.ConclusionIn the year 1963, on 22nd November President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas in Texas during a political campaign.
Lee Harvey Oswald was captivated for committing the crime but he was shot and murdered by Jack Ruby two days before the trial.
