Confidence is a general term which can be applied universally while self confidence is a specific term which is limited to an individual only. Self confidence makes a person able to succeed in his life and at the same time the same thing prepare you to face the failure. The success is always related to the self confidence. “Who has confidence in himself will gain the confidence of others”.( Leib Lazarow). Self confidence is the driving force behind any person. The success and failure both equally depends on the amount of self confidence one would possess. True self confidence comes from an attitude where you assure yourself to face any kind of situations with true sportsman spirit, no matter how difficult the problem is or how easy it seems to be. Self-confidence gives us the freedom of making mistakes and face it. We can cite Lot of factors which can contribute to the development of self confidence. Among them, I think the cognitive, biological and learned aspects are most important. Self confidence starts from the mind. The thinking pattern of mind influences the way in which one respond to various things he met in the life. Mind is the driving force behind every action which is resulted from self confidence. Thinking can be positive and negative. Positive thinking always contributes to the self confidence while negative thinking will retard it. In order to build up the self confidence the best way is to teach the subject, the ways of positive thinking. Self Confidence 2 Biological factors can also influence the development of self confidence. Parents with sound confidence or self confidence will have their children also in the same category normally. Heredity plays a vital role in developing self confidence as we know that persons with psychological disorders are more likely to give birth to children of the same caliber. Some bad experiences can destroy the self confidence while some good ones can boost it. So the self confidence is developed through the experiences one may go through in his life. Regular occurrence of bad incidents in one’s life can demoralize a person even if he has all the resources like, money, education, status etc, to tackle it. “There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.” (William Shakespeare). Starting from my school days onwards, people have rated me as an introvert. Everybody complained about my attitude in facing others, which was not so good. I never did anything seriously to improve up on my interpersonal skills. Even in my college days the same nature continued and the complaints goes on increasing about it, from my fellow students, and others who are in touch with me from the society. I hate professions which require more communications and decided that I will never take up a sales profession in my life. After the completion of my master degree in Physics, I started my career in the Production field in a tire manufacturing company in India and worked there for 1 year. But because of the poor climatic conditions in my work place, I was affected seriously by malaria disease and forced to resign from the job. This makes me jobless for another 2 more years and I fed up with giving answers to public enquiries about it. Finally I forced to leave my country in search of a job and went to Self Confidence 3 Dubai, where I got the Production Manager post in an advertising agency. The actual story, which transformed my life completely, started from here. In Dubai, the work culture is entirely different. It is very difficult to find a person with specific assignments. The person, who is working in Production, sometimes will have to go for sales, purchasing, estimation or any other job which the company assigned to you. You have no other option but to obey it, since you cannot return to your country all of a sudden. This is because; you have to surrender your passport to the employer once you reached Dubai. After around 2 months of working in the Production department, the company asked me to concentrate in sales. Though I was not willing to obey that instruction, my poor financial setups forced me to obey the instruction. My first assignment was to meet a British guy who was the head of the Dubai Commerce and Tourism Promotion Board. The company asked me to meet this guy and discuss about an anticipated printing job from them. This British guy was a matured person and he received me with honour and after a brief chat about me and my company he has shown me the details of the project and asked for my opinion about it. I have explained what all I know about it. To my utter surprise, this guy who told me earlier that he is waiting for another 2 more sales persons from different companies, has handed over the entire project to me even before the estimation. My management was also surprised, since they never thought that I will be able to capture a business from a guy like him. From there onwards my company started to send me for more and more sales and I also started to develop more interest in it. My company benefitted a lot from my unknown abilities and finally they posted me as the head of the sales department. Self Confidence 4 The reason of transformation of my career from Production to Sales can be attributed to the change agent, communication I had with the British guy. The interaction with him has filled me with immense confidence and self belief in dealing with others. His personality, character and way of dealing with others had influenced me a lot. I could have given up my profession in Dubai; sometimes I met another person in place of him. My first experience itself was excellent and that communication has changed me a lot in my approaches, interactions, and confidence level. At present I am very much confident in my interpersonal skills and also my life style also changed a lot. Now I am more confident in my conversation with others and I don’t have the inferior complex at all now. I realized that it is the behaviour that makes a good personality rather than the physical appearance or anything. Now I am confident in dealing with any persons irrespective of their status or looks. .”Life must be understood backward. But it must be lived forward.” (Soren Kierkegaard) “The first step towards solving a problem is to begin.” Answers will not search for us. Instead we should search for them. Now looking back and analysing the whole things happened in my life and the reasons for my earlier behavioural pattern I can see the influence of cognitive and biological factors. Though there are no scientific evidences for the functioning of mind, we can rely more on cognitive and biological reasons to explain the different activities of our mind. Negative thinking is the root cause of lack of self confidence. In my case, I was hesitant to interact freely with others earlier because of my inferiority complex. I considered all others superior to me and I thought my way of speaking or presentation of certain things may not be attractive to others. So I prepared to shy away from others in most cases. My traditional family and social setups also contributed a lot to my peculiar behaviour. My family emphasised more on Self Confidence 5 religious and moral values and I was afraid of doing something against it. Though my father was a brave military officer, my mother was a simple house wife without having any former education or any type of ‘out of the village’ exposure. Since my father was on duty most of the time, we brought up under the strict supervisions of our mother. She did not allow us to go to any public places such as clubs or cinema theatre which will give more exposure different modes of public life. She had instructed us more on moral and religious values. My father did not get enough opportunities to notice the developments of us since he was engaged in his duties mostly out of our state. Moreover, I have started my school studies in a village with less economical developments. The facilities were poor and I did not receive enough opportunities to interact with others. The conventional curriculum asked me to concentrate only on studies rather than anything else. So I did exactly the same thing scoring big successes in my studies though failed miserably in almost all the other aspects of personality development. I thought studies are meant only for getting the jobs. Apart from the environmental and the cognitive factors, biological factors also affected the development of self confidence. I started to lose my hairs even at an early stage like my college hood. I have often complained to myself about my looks. I was too short in height and that forced me to stay away from others especially from persons with more than 5.5 feet long. The British to whom I interacted in Dubai was around only 5.3 feet in height and also he was suffering from baldness. But the confidence level and maturity displayed by him forced me, to analyze my thinking pattern about myself and the roots of positive thinking has been planted by Self Confidence 6 that British guy through our communication. Now I have changed from an introvert to an extrovert. Learned experiences also contributed to my change. I met with so many multi cultural peoples of different countries in Dubai and the constant communication with them has changed my ideology of life a lot. I have faced a lot of tough situations during my professional life at Dubai, which actually made me stronger in facing the realities of life now. A person brought up under no tension can always find it difficult to adjust with the tough situations when it comes. I know a person who has married the only daughter of a ‘teacher parent’ family. She was also a teacher brought up under strict moral and religious backgrounds. After the marriage she came to Dubai along with her husband and got a ‘teacher’ job there. She could not adjust with the multicultural atmosphere there and also find it difficult to tackle the trends of modern education there. The management, co-teachers and the students asked her to help the students in the examination which she denied due to his strong belief in ethics and morality. She continued in her profession without any interest and gradually started to develop some delusions. She feared the co-teachers, management and the students looking at her suspiciously and started to think negatively. Finally her emotions were broke down once and had to undergo the treatment of a Psychiatrist there. Now after regaining her mental equilibrium she is stronger in facing the challenges. So learned experiences can contribute immensely to the self confidence. Nobody can lead a successful life without having proper understanding of the self. Our all deliberate activities are connected to self confidence. A doctor can be a good teacher if he got the proper confidence. At the same time a teacher may not be a good teacher if he lacks the self Self Confidence 7 confidence. The talents are inherited. Identifying the talent is the most important thing. We are going through both conscious and unconscious activities. All the conscious activities directly related with the self confidence. Unknown or unobserved abilities can be bring out through communication. Communication is the foundation stone of self confidence. It also helps to identify different traits of personalities and to study the multicultural personalities. Communication will sometimes bring out the inherent abilities of a person. It also helps us to identify and rate ourselves. It also reveals the strong points along with the lagging areas. Cognitive, biological, environmental and learned experiences contribute a lot in the development of self confidence. Self Confidence 8 Sources 1.
