Cognitive and Emotional Aging - Case Study Example

 Another crisis to be resolved by old people is represented by disease and illnesses. The character in the chapter has a positive resolution of the crisis as he believes himself to be enjoying his old age. He is having a party for his eightieth birthday and is rejoicing with his family, friends, and relatives. He still feels he is healthy and enjoys the beauty of nature and living as a part of nature. 2. Physical aging is a natural process and every person has to undergo this phase sooner or later.

Physical aging brings many changes to the body of a person. According to Ward (2013), “Some age-related physical changes are obvious: an extra laugh line or two, graying hair, and additional weight around the midsection, for instance”. During physical aging, many factors like physical, social, emotional, and psychosocial ones affect a person. Physical health has a lot of importance in the aging period as it is hard for an old person to survive with an ill and unfit body. In the aging period, psychosocial factors also have importance, as the social life of an old person should be hassle-free and tension free to give aged people a comfortable life.

Social issues such as loneliness, lack of physical and mental independence, difficulty in coping with physical inability, frustration with medical problems, boredom, and financial stress can hurt the life of aging people. As per Nabili (2013), “These factors hurt on the overall health of an older individual. Addressing these psychosocial problems is an integral component of seniors' complex medical care”. Emotional factors also play an important role in the aging period.

According to Depp (2010, p.10), “There are several reasons why the concept of successful aging may increasingly hinge on cognitive and emotional phenotypes”. Emotional feelings such as depression, stress, tension, frustration, and anxiety are mental problems faced by old people. These can only be overcome by indulging in social activities, exercise, dancing, and so on. As per Gross (1997, pp.590-599), “Popular stereotypes suggest that people become less emotional as they age”. We can see that the character in the chapter is really happy emotionally and psychologically as he is surrounded by close people at his birthday party.

However, when he gets a rejection by his social surrounding as when he was in a car and a person called him an old man, it can have a negative impact. 3. This journal article “Emotional Aging “Recent Findings and Future Trends” written by Susanne Scheibe talks about emotional well-being and wellness among people aged more than 70 years. The study aims to find out the emotional processing, emotional regulation, and brain function of old people. This research concentrates on the fact that not all old people are emotionally sad and depressed in their old age, but the opposite is true.

The research study says that most old people in their 70s are emotionally healthy, with some exceptions. The article suggests that according to the socio-emotional selectivity theory, old people are motivated to remain emotionally healthy as they know their life is running out of hand. According to Liden (2013), “One of the major aspects of socioemotional selectivity theory is how individuals with different perspectives of time behave socially”
