Domestic violence offenders are people who commit offenses of “domestic assault” and cause any “serious bodily injury” to an “intimate partner” (Domestic Violence Offender Program Standards, 2008, p.1). Mentally disordered persons often display characteristics such as “grandiosity, lack of remorse” and other “behavior traits such as instability, lack of planning and criminality” (Yiend et al, 2013, p.4). .

Sex offenders also manifest symptoms like “antisocial lifestyle” as well as psychopathic personality apart from “high impulsivity, denial, cognitive distortions and emotional distress” and the absence of emotional control (Perkins et al, 1998, p.2). Similarly, their behavior will also be characterized by empathy to victims and emotional loneliness, which may be present in the case of mentally disordered as well as violent and domestic violence offenders. On the other hand, they manifest symptoms like “sexually deviant arousal, fantasies and pre-occupation,” which may not be present in the other categories of offenders (p.2). In the case of violent offenders also, factors such as “impulsivity, anti-social attitudes, pro-criminal beliefs, substance abuse” etc characterize this type of criminal behavior (Macklin & Gilbert, 2011, p.1). Besides, they also manifest a tendency to show disinterest in work, study and other activities (p.1). Violent offenders are major threats to the society as the range of their crime includes homicide and serious assault on other people.

On the other hand, domestic violence offenders commit the crimes on their family members including children or intimate partner. Research evidence suggests that domestic violence is usually manifest in adults who experienced physical abuse during their childhood and they may tend to inflict violence on their “children and intimate partners” (Murrel, Christoff & Henning, 2007, p.524). This type of violence is different from all the other three categories as its impacts both in physical and emotional contexts remain confined to the family.
