IntroductionIn older times, sex education was considered as immoral practice for high school kids who were perceived as too immature to understand the dynamics of such subject-matter. Later, schools began with programs that encouraged abstinence from sex until marriage. However in modern times, the newer generations demand more knowledge and awareness about safer sexual practices instead of simple abstinence programmes. Today, majority of high schools have moved towards development of syllabi and course outlines where sex education has been made either mandatory or atleast recommended for all students, to ensure social benefits and healthier environment.

Program for high schoolsWhile designing a programme for sex education to high school children, the following components must be incorporated therein:Promotion of abstinence – Abstinence in extreme form depicts that children stay completely away from engaging in sexual activities. However, keeping in mind the statistics that prove that abstinence-related programs are highly ineffective and divert young people towards unsafe sex, a more realistic approach must be followed in developing the program (Frost & Forrest 1995).

Various ways must be taught to high school kids to avoid physical contact with their partners, including self-stimulation (masturbation), phone sex and cybersex. This ensures that no body fluids are exchanged between them.Medical awareness – Strong brainstorming is required in this area. Students must be made aware of various protective measures that must be taken during intercourse to avoid contact of fluids, unplanned pregnancy and spreading of contagious sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Protections must be brought in at the session in order to practically teach them the safe usage of these devices including latex coverings. They must be shown how to employ different latex jackets and ways to avoid their rupturing during sexual activities. Benefits of circumcision for males and frequent periodic checkups for presence of infections must be sold to the audience of this program. Involving a competent doctor and his guidance during this part of program shall be helpful to address concerns of audience about credibility of program’s content.

Pressure handling tactics – Children must be taught how to deal with pressures from their partners to be more sexually responsive. It is one of the most difficult aspects of this program since it is very convenient for young people to give in to these pressures. They must be encouraged to stick to non-penetrative sexual doings to mitigate risks of STIs and pregnancy. Methods avoiding penetration are referred to as ‘foreplay’ and include kissing, touching and other acts providing mutual satisfaction for the couple.

Psychological obstacles – Students must be instructed to encourage these practices and educate others of the same learning outcomes that they achieved with this program. It should enable attitude inoculation of young people towards safe sex. Minds of children must be developed to be prepared to defend, respond and justify with reasoning to arguments that are against their stance for safe sex practices. They should be tested with weak form of attacks so that they are mentally prepared to face actual stronger disagreements with opposing school of thoughts.

Similar concept of reactance theory must also be exploited to the benefit of agenda of this program. These students must be trained to restore their freedom of actions and opinions in adverse circumstances that threaten the existence of safe sex mechanisms. Reverse psychology must be used by mentor by stimulate limiting conditions to liberty of audience to perceive and behave. The resulting aggression exhibited by them must be converted into positive energy that should be effectively utilized to guard their interests.

Ineffective measures – Children at high school age are mostly aware of safe sex methods that have proved out to be unsuccessful such as birth control pills for women, usage of spermicides and vasectomy of male genitals. Certain contraceptive techniques also turn out to be incapable of protecting from STIs.
