Assignment In the online test that I completed I was abele to score 13 out of the 20 questions that were asked after having taken 10 minutes to complete it. Of the 20 facial expressions I was able to accurately identify 13 of them with ease however I was quite surprised that I wasn’t able to get most if not all the expressions right (Great Good, 2012). This only goes to show that my accuracy was worse than I had anticipated. The facial expressions that were difficult for me to identify were the one for love, fear, distinguishing between embarrassment and shame as they are very closely related and lastly distinguishing between pride and contempt. However, the facial expressions that were easy to identify included; happiness, surprise, disgust, flirtatiousness, pain amusement and love. The information that I used to identify the expressions includes the facial muscles particularly around the eyes, the tilting of the head either forward or backwards. For instance, in the facial expression showing interest, I looked at the way she had tilted her head lightly to the front, her eyes were raised up and she had a slight smile (Great Good, 2012). According to the textbook, the two reasons that explain why decoding of facial expressions is sometimes inaccurate is because one; there are almost 3000 various meaningful facial expressions and many of these look very similar, thus it is very easy for an individual to confuse between two or more facial expressions and second facial expressions are rapidly and constantly changing therefore catching up can prove to be a difficult task. This information applies to my life in that, since I relate with many people which includes my family, friends and the society at large, I have to know what they are feeling or thinking when we are conversing by correctly reading their facial expressions. Most importantly, it will help me know when I am offending someone, when they are happy or when they are in contempt of what I am saying or doing. Thus this information will help me relate better when socializing. Assignment 2 According to the two routes to persuasion article there are two main routes when it comes to persuasion and these are, central and peripheral. In regards to the central route, it entails thoughtful consideration of the ideas as well as content of the message. The peripheral route on the other hand, happens when a listener decides on whether to concur with the message on the basis of other cues other than the arguments strengths or the ideas the message has. I chose to analyze two advertisements in regards to the persuasion strategies they use and they are; the Nokia N80 series and Colgate advert. The peripheral route persuasion advert for the Nokia N80 series, has a catch phrase that goes “the next episode is about to begin” which means that the people who watching the advert obviously got hooked. In the advisement, beautiful sceneries are shown and there is a background music that is new and also beautiful. Despite the fact that the Nokia N80 features full details were not outlined, anybody who was looking the advertisement was bound to be interested in the product and want to know more about it. The Colgate advert on the other hand went for the central route of persuasion since it shows results of the experiment as well as the good things that the teeth benefit from using the product. The consumer wants to be sure and knowledgeable of the product they are buying whether it is effective and also whether it would be practical to purchase it. The Colgate advert makes the consumer think about the necessity of the product and its effectiveness and not to be persuaded by the beautiful models on the advert. Colgate advert demonstrates fats abut their product which the consumer goes for. Colgate ad link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PR7doUo1N0&feature=endscreen Nokia N80 series ad link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wof4HDVKDNs Assignment 3 The adverts in the craiglist.org site are used for all sorts of businesses including looking for love. In this site there s personals section where people the world over are able to find mates based on the requirements they want. There are various categories of relationships including strictly platonic, men looking for women and vice-versa, casual encounters as well as rants and raves. These categories apply the different theories of attraction that exist including evolutionary theory of attraction. One ad that demonstrates evolutionary theory of attraction is that of Alexander from city Alabama who says that he is a nice male looking for a nice woman. He states that he is 6’0 and muscular. This ad reflects the evolutionary theory in that the person advertising is looking for someone who matches the physical attractiveness qualities he wants in a woman. Nice male looking for a nice woman - 27 (alexander city alabama) Date: 2012-11-18, 5:56PM EST sjkqh-3419136755@pers.craigslist.org I am a very nice and fun individual I am currently in school and I am single with no kids and I live alone which is okay but it gets boring here if U do not know anyone I just moved to the area I am looking for sum one fun and loves affection and wants to get to know a nice guy I also have pics if you are interested contact me and I will respond back asap and your age or race is not an issue with me I am 6'0 225 muscular and I am African American and very attractive just chose to post on here for the hell of it. The other advert that demonstrates equity theory is that of a 32 year single mother who has a 7 year old girl. She looking for a man who is serious and who will form a relationship with her where both them will benefit in terms of loyalty, hard work, time and many others. This relates to the equity theory since the women is looking for man who will compliment her and who will provide as much as she is providing for the relationship to be a success. Looking for the right guy - 32 (Opelika) Date: 2012-11-17, 7:15PM EST zgxmf-3417283722@pers.craigslist.org I am a 32 yr old single mother of a 7 yr old little girl who is my life! I am looking to find someone in the Auburn/Opelika area. Someone that knows how to treat a lady. Someone who can have a good time staying at home on the couch or a night on the town with friends and having fun. I really want a man who is in it for the long haul, NOT A SHORT-TERM BOOTY CALL RELATIONSHIP! I've had enough head games, liars, cheaters, bullshit, etc. and will not tolerate married men--its your marriage to screw up, don't ask me to help. I have brown shoulder length hair and brown eyes. I have been told I have pretty eyes and a nice smile. I am a short BBW but I am secure with my body and with who I am, so keep that in mind. Like most music except for hard rap and heavy metal, the New Orleans Saints, Auburn ( WAR EAGLE! ) most movies except scary movies or really bloody movies. If you'd like to talk, send me a message ( pic would be good too ) Hope to hear from you soon A third ad that shows the social exchange theory where the one advertising is looking for someone with qualities they want in a partner and they offer something in return is the one for man in his early 60s looking for a discreet older lady in exchange of having a promiscuous time. This ad applies to the social exchange theory in that, both want people want each other because they have something they can offer to the other in exchange of what they are getting. Looking for a VERY DISCREET older lady (Auburn) Date: 2012-11-30, 4:28PM EST zs9vz-3411697872@pers.craigslist.org White married businessman, early sixties, 5' 10", 185 lbs, well mannered, physically fit, excellent personal hygiene, well dressed, professional, and very discreet. Looking for an older lady who resides between Auburn and Montgomery and is possibly attached and also very discreet. I'm not into playing games or exchanging lewd photos. I'm looking for someone like myself who enjoys being a little promiscuous every once in awhile. If interested, please contact me and we can decide if we'd like to arrange to meet in a safe, secure business atmosphere for an initial meeting. If all goes well, and you like what you see, then we can possibly pursue a more liberal get together. PLEASE NOTE: Due to the amount of bots, ads, and scam sites who reply to these posts, please put "Montgomery Biscuits" in the subject line so I'll know you are a real person. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks! Location: Auburn it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests Assignment 4 An actual scene in a popular television show that demonstrates some form of racism is sex and the city whereby most of the episodes just focus on the four white women who have no black friends. Despite the fact that the show is in its 6 year run, the four women who are the main characters hardly have any black friends. This shows some kind of racism since a minority group was not featured. Another different seen from the popular show known as how I met your mother, where one of the characters Barney acts in a very sexism manner whereby he manipulates women so that he may sleep with as much as he can. He also makes sexist comments such as “bros before hos”. Nevertheless, Barney’s manipulation and objectification of women so as to have sex with them and also boost his ego is not seen in the other characters in the show. Some of the other scenes that constitute prejudice for instance when in the how I met your mother show, Barney prejudices women by saying that in order to have sex with them, one needs to get them drunk and he also states that most college girls who wear in a particular manner are usually very easy. These programs are a form of institutionalized sexism in that they show that society and especially men in some cases hold women purely as sex objects who were created simply for their gratification. Despite how many people refute this, the television programs always bring out that side of society. The television shows also show institutionalized racism that exists in our institutions and world at large. Just like in the sex and the city show, there are still white who do not interact with black and vice-versa due to their own personal reasons. In regards to the social learning theory, there are harmful consequences of exposing young people to such material that contains racism as well as sexism. Social learning theory dictates that people are able to learn while they are within a social context. Mostly when it comes to children they better through observation and so showing them racism and sexist programs make them think that that is right and it is how the world runs. With time as they grow they start having being sexist and also showing racist’s behaviors since they do not any other way. Work Cited Great Good. Body language quiz: test your emotional intelligence.
