It could also help avoid similar circumstances in the family especially if the condition is hereditary and as it always does, pathology helps not only in the advancement of science but in benefitting other people with similar circumstances.
In my point of view, becoming a professional in a system that categorizes and labels others could really be heartbreaking and challenging so one should be physically, emotionally, mentally and psychologically strong to be able to perform well. Psychologists should be physically healthy because the job is very demanding and therefore, physically draining. Emotional strength is also a must in pathology because many critiques abound who could really be mean and hurting so one has to possess the ability to think positively and focus more on the constructive side of every criticism. Mental strength on the other hand is much needed in performing one’s duties and responsibilities, especially in considering therapies and constructing sentences for a productive conversation with patients. Psychological strength is also very important because the job requires a lot of thinking, demanding much of the mental energy of a person.
Professionals in such a system I guess are the most hated because of their job. They are also the most misunderstood professionals in the public’s viewpoint because they are labelled and categorized by those who do not appreciate their profession. Words like ‘shrink’ are common labels on them that suggest disdain. Some fear them, others avoid them and still others hate them, taking their diagnosis personally. These are just some of the trying moments for psychologists and they could get into the bones. Despite these, there are still those who can recognize the importance of the profession which is a good thing for the people involved because they are encouraged in the furtherance of this branch of science. For the professional’s part, these should serve to them as driving forces to let them have more evidence or proof and engage in more intense studies to prove themselves to be in the right direction and not just based on unfounded information.
Another important matter to be considered in the profession is the ability of an individual to separate one’s feelings and religious views from pathology’s point of view. This could be a difficult task but I think it is possible one has to work hard on it to be able to succeed. I believe there is a higher being, one who is powerful and is in charge of things that are out of our hands. However, this does not mean that the higher being is in charge of everything nor has it given powers to only one person rather has given as much as one needs and can make use of. That is why people need other people to survive. Some needed doctors and others were made to be doctors yet those doctors also needed other doctors therefore, each of us was made differently. One could be gifted in engineering, others in medicine and many other things so I guess there are things that one could specifically do with great ease and skill. Pathology, specifically psychology is one of those professions where one is gifted with talents and it is just the right thing to apply them in the field. If only people would realize this fact, there would probably be a better perception of the profession and the need for one who practices it.
Being raised in a Mexican family where my parents believe in modern medicine, my cultural background has not had much effect on my view of pathology. My parents’ beliefs and practices have also been greatly affected by American views that their influences on me are more of their adopted culture than their own. They depend on modern medicine as much as any of the Americans do and they openly welcome studies and discoveries that could benefit them although their decisions are also marked with a lot of consideration before they accept new ideas. The same has been imparted to me so that even if discoveries and researches are welcome, they undergo scrutiny before they are accepted. With my perception of the profession and my religious and cultural point of view, it has been instilled in me that helping one’s self and other people is the reason why some have what others do not have and vice versa. That is, I have been given the abilities and capabilities to help myself first with whatever means there is available at hand in whatever circumstance I find myself in. In addition, the same abilities and capabilities can also be used to help others in their situations where I could be of help to them. Likewise, I believe I need the help of others as well on other aspects of my life, to help me have a better living.
