Army Women Suffering Mental Health Insert Army Wives Suffering Mental Health Introduction The army wives of American soldiersexperience problems when their husbands go to fight in other countries to fight for their nation. This is according to the report from the American news. The analysis in this paper reflects on various issues concerning the report. This paper has two major parts; the first part reflects on the method used to gather information, the variables that are involved and the results of the research. The second part will deal with the general analysis of the report, how it affects the knowledge of the public on the issue and the propositions to make the future research better. Section one The report extensively dealt with the idea that the army wives experienced health problems when their husbands went to work in other countries. Mental health is one of the major problems that the wives faced in their families when the army men were at work (Zoroya, 2010). The report tries to prove this fact by examining the number of soldiers’ wives who come for assistance in mental health matters. Scientists use different methods to collect and analyze their information. They may use case study method, experimental method, correlation method or naturalistic observation method. The method used in the survey was the case study method. The research only based on a group of people who are the army and their wives (Zoroya, 2010). It also wanted to study the cause of mental problems among the army wives. An extensive research is responsible for the concrete solution. For instance, the report indicates that the research took a long period of time, which is between 2003 and 2006 (Zoroya, 2010). The research seems to be complicated, but in the real sense, it contains some truth. The report does not give the accurate answer to the situation. It also gives room to build future hypothesis, and develop more researches by other scientists. In searching for effect or cause, scientists set up experiments so that whenever there is a change in one item this change causes variation in something else in a way that is predictable. The quantities that change are the variables (Zoroya, 2010). Due to this effect, there are three different types of variables. They include controlled variables, dependent and independent variables. It is true from the report that when soldiers went to war in Afghanistan or Iraq for a period of one month up to eleven months, their wives suffered more from depression than those women whose soldiers did not go for the war in those areas (Zoroya, 2010). The difference was 18%. On the other hand, when the period was increased from 11months onwards the rate of depression suffering in army women increased to 24%. The confounding variables according to the research are the length of separation and trouble that result from home. These variable affect the results since depression may come because of other factors then it can be related to be the husbands’ deployment to war. The method partly identifies case study as the main method that was used to conduct the research. In this context, the issue was to identify whether soldiers’ women suffer health problems due to their husbands’ deployment or not (Zoroya, 2010). The scientists identified the soldiers’ wives who came to consult for counseling due to depression and health related problems. The records were well preserved for future calculation. When the soldiers were deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq for a period of one month to eleven months, the number of soldiers’ wives who sort for depression guidance was recorded. The number of soldiers who did not go to fight and their wives was also indentified. The next step was to find out depression status in the wives of the army men who were deployed to the same areas for war but for a period more than eleven months (Zoroya, 2010). To find out this, the number of army wives who came to seek for health guidance, and their husbands were deployed for eleven months and above were recorded. After computation, the results for both cases were analyzed. The major findings of the research indicate that, when army men are deployed to fight for a long period, their wives suffer more from stress and health related problems. On the other hand, when the soldiers are not sent out for war their wives suffer less from depression (Zoroya, 2010). It is also true from the report that if a mother suffers from depression, then the child will suffer more from depression. This indicates that deployments cause health problems to all family members. The ideas that come from the results support fully the hypothesis stated. The scientists recommend that this study can be improved by getting other additional health resources for families (Zoroya, 2010). They also suggest that there is the need to be more devoted to overcoming the problems that they encountered plus those that result from deployments. Section 2 According to the report there is no scientific support to prove the accuracy of this report (Zoroya, 2010). For instance, the percentage and the nearest number of women who participated in the study are the only features that are that are lay the base of the report. Basing on these two factors scientifically, there is no way a scientist can get real percentages given in the report by only using approximate numbers (Zoroya, 2010). This can easily result in many errors that scientifically cannot be corrected. For instance, the number of women who did not seek for health facilities is not identified. The real percentages for those women who went to seek for depression guidance cannot be located in the whole article. All these factors point out that the article may not be accurate and it is based on self-calculations that cannot be put to the test. The article does not correctly describe the scientific study (Zoroya, 2010). Many parts of the study are omitted from the report. These parts may contain concrete information that can help in determining the validity of the research. To be precise, most of the variables have not been listed (Zoroya, 2010). From this perspective, it is possible that there is biasness that reveals in the report. This is because it only dwells on the higher percentages and does not consider the lower percentages to give the reader a comprehensive understanding of the content. Despite the fact that there are disputes on the manner in which the media report the issue in the news, there is some truth in it. According to psychologists, there are many reasons that can cause stress and depression to people. Separation is one of the factors that cause depression. Separation can be caused by several reasons. For example, working conditions, family conflicts and among others can easily cause depression (Zoroya, 2010). The soldiers’ and their wives are separated from one another when the soldiers go to work. Various experiences can cause stress and depression to such a woman when the soldier is at work. The depression increases when the army man is sent to fight away from his country (Zoroya, 2010). It might be due to fear that the husband may incur injuries or even die while at war. This report only supports what the public already have, and it cannot change their perception in any way. Buffalo Scientific Research on Depression This research aimed at identifying that when soldiers were deployed to war their wives experienced greater depression rates than those wives whose husbands (army men) worked in their own country (US) (Zoroya, 2010). In the research, only one hundred and fifty thousand soldiers were used to determine the appropriateness of the hypothesis. All soldiers were allowed to experience the same conditions. For example, the army men worked in US at the same time and when they were sent to fight in Libya, all of them went for a period of six months. When the soldiers were deployed to Iraq, all of them went for a period more than eleven months. Before every soldier left his home for duty, the US government paid his allowances to provide for all the family needs. The research was carried out between October 2005 and November 2009. When the army men were deployed to Libya for six months, the rate of depressed women increased from 16% to 26% making a difference of 10%. This indicates that women were more comfortable when their husbands worked in their homeland than in Libya for the six months. The Iraq expedition that took sixteen months led to the highest rate of depressed wives of the army men. It hit the highest rate of 46.67% (Zoroya, 2010). This created a difference of 20% when the army men were in Libya. The general finding of the report is that army wives experienced less depression problems when the army men were deployed to Libya for six months than in Iraq. The other point is that when the fighting length was increased from six months to sixteen months the rate of army wives who suffered depression increased. Assessment of the hypothesis The main objective of the research was to identify whether there is a relationship between stress and depression and deployment of army men to different areas of the world (Zoroya, 2010). The results fully support the hypothesis, and it can form the base for the other interested scientists to further experiment and get their suggestions. Conclusion The scientists carry out their research in different ways. After the research, they provide the full research results to the public through the media. The message of the research can be reported to the public correctly or wrongly depending on the news writer and the news publisher. The information passing through different departments might experience alternations. These alternations might alter the understanding of the message from the scientists (Zoroya, 2010). For example, the report from the news department does not contain all the variables due to personal interest of the news writer and the publisher. This is according to the news report that reported the issue on army wives. The research from Libya and Iraq indicate fully the cause of the increased rate of depression on army wives to be the length of time, which the army men take when they go to fight for the freedom of their country.
