They are responsible for ensuring public safety and providing “quality service in partnership” (New Jersey State Police, 2013) with the communities. The New Jersey State Police aims to fulfill its mission by working towards the strengthening of the three pillars of honor, duty and fidelity. The police officials promise to act with integrity and always maintain honesty and truth in their work. Equality and unbiased enforcement of laws is a top priority. This is a core value of the department which identifiable with the Core Value of ‘Respect’ held by the Saint Leo University. They hold the fellow staff and the civilians at high ethical standards. They are obliged to protect the public and consider it their duty to serve them with the highest quality of service. They ensure that the duty is never waived off and keep a sharp eye to prevent any instance of criminal activity. Fidelity is one of the key words of the New Jersey State Police. They uphold the traditions of the department and embody the principles upon which the institution is founded through their work. The officials maintain pride in themselves and effort that they put in order to serve and protect the people of the state. The role played by the New Jersey State Police is crucial in the maintenance of law and order within the state. They play the role of defender of law and order in the state. In case of any offence the police staffs gather all required information and legal evidences with swift efficiency and ensues that the offender is convicted. The police remains prepared for any contingency that might occur at any point of time and respond promptly for the quick recovery of the state from the situation. The department acts as a safe house for the criminal as well as non criminal judicially related functions and provides the resources when required for the identification purposes in different cases. In all its duties the state police recognize that “prevention of crime is of greater importance than the punishment of criminals” (General Order #1, 2013). “The Division of State Police” (New Jersey State Police, 2013) is dedicated to offer the best service to the public and is open to hearing any compliment of compliant from the people it serves. This encourages the people to have faith on the troops and the troops are also inspired to develop themselves. The external sources speak of the New Jersey State Police on strong positive notes for the sincerity with which the department delivers its services. The Core Values of the State Police of New Jersey are summed up in the words: honor, duty and fidelity. These are similar to the Core Values embodied by the students of the Saint Leo University. These three core values allow the department to achieve its mission and set an example of excellence and responsible stewardship. By considering all the people of the state with respect, the staffs are working towards the building of a responsible community. Towards the beginning of January this year, the troopers of the New Jersey police interfered in a case of armed robbery by a pair of robbers. The investigators have discovered the vehicle in which the suspects have seen to flee. The resident of a house in Salem City has been charged with robbery after the vehicle was spotted near his residence. The suspect is a juvenile and has been released under bail (New Jersey State Police Official News Release, 2013). The Seattle Police Department “The Seattle Police Department” (Seattle Police Department, 2013) is in the Washington State and “is the largest municipal law enforcement agency” (Seattle Police Department, 2013) in the State. The jurisdiction of the police department lies in Seattle area which is inhabited by six hundred and twelve thousand people at present. The area is approximately one hundred and forty three square miles with the “population of the King County” (Seattle Police Department, 2013) being one million nine hundred thirty three thousand and four hundred. The total population of the Washington State is six million seven hundred thirty thousand and two hundred. The department works with staff strength of approximately one thousand eight and twenty. The Seattle Police Department (SPD) holds the mission to “work with the people of Seattle to secure a safe and just future for all by fighting crime, reducing fear, and building community – one person, one community, and one neighborhood at a time” (Seattle Police Department, 2013). The three basic pillars of the mission of this department are to fight against any form of crime, to reduce the feeling of fear in the minds of the people and to build a safe and strong community. This embodies the feeling of respect and the bond of a good community. They aim at accepting both praises as well as critiques and communicating with the community effectively that would help in developing partnership with the local citizens in their fight against crime. This would promote transparency in their way of work. The outcome is the establishment of integrity among the people and the development of a deep bond with the community whom they are striving to serve and protect. The Seattle Police plays an important role in allowing the residents of the place as well as visitors to “enjoy a sense of safety and live free from threat of danger, injury, or harm” (Seattle Police Department, 2013) in person or property. They consider each individual in their jurisdiction with equality and dignity and put an effort to build a healthy community by making a good impact in the minds of the people at any occasion of public contact. The businesses in the area run well under the protection of the Seattle Police Department, each personnel of which are driven by “a spirit of integrity, excellence and professionalism” (Seattle Police Department, 2013). This leads to the building of responsible stewardship, similar to the ideal followed by the students of the Saint Leo University. They make patrols in all the five precincts on foot, or bikes or in car. The Communication Center provides answer to the civilians in regards to their queries “for police, fire and medical emergencies in the city” (Seattle Police Department, 2013). This instills a sense of respect in the minds of the civilians for the officers who keeps an alert vigil round the clock to protect them. The commoners are also motivated by the example set by the police and themselves extend a hand of cooperation with them to build a peaceful community. The Seattle Police Department holds itself in a high esteem for being able to provide excellent service for its people. The Chief of Police, John Diaz, emphasizes upon the need to reduce fear in the minds of the people through increased police presence in all the neighborhoods. This would lead to the achievement of the mission of the Department and keep it in high esteem in the minds of its people. The Seattle Police conducts regular surveys to judge the level and standard of its functionalities and considers the feedback provided by the people of the community seriously to work for its betterment. This is a value that identifies with one of the core values of the Saint Leo University (Student Services Division, 2013). The students of the Saint Leo University also emphasizes strongly upon personal development. These surveys are conducted over telephone, via face to face meetings or through the website of the department. The information gathered is presented to the Command Staff of the Department and then the feedback reaches the Patrol Precincts. There opportunity to thank an SPD officer is also given to the people. Whenever they are benefited by the services of a police officer the common people can express their satisfaction and gratitude for the service and thank the personnel that helped them. The people nurture a good image about the police department. Several reports and feedbacks from the people reflect that the Seattle Police Department has a good reputation in the state and this way the department remains encouraged to deliver prompt and efficient service and stay in confidence of the people of Seattle. There has been a recent incident in which the police officers in Seattle Police Department arrested a man that is suspected to attempt a burglary. The man has been arrested after the security officers on duty of monitoring a construction site reported to the police the presence of a suspicious man in the construction site at around 9.30 pm at night. When the police reached the place they found the man in the area and he tried to avoid being noticed by the police hiding against a wall. It has been reported that the man was of strikingly similar features and wearing the same clothes as the man found in the security video footage of the construction site. Some reportedly stolen properties have also been found at the place where the officials initially met the suspect. A car has also been found nearby in which more properties were present that are suspected to be stolen. The prompt action of the police officials has lead to the arrest of the suspect (Police: Security cams help nab burglar at Seattle construction site, 2013). In another incidence a person was suspected to attempt robbery when the suspect ran into the house in which the robbery was suspected to occur. The Swat officers obtained the search warrant in sometime by which the suspect managed to escape. Detectives continue to keep follow ups to find the whereabouts of the suspect (Jamieson, 2013). The core values of the Seattle Police Department are to excel at its fight against crime, instigate a community feeling in the minds of the people and held all people in respect. These core values comply with America’s traditional and constitutional respect for individual liberties. The Saint Leo University students recognize six Institutional Core Values; “Excellence, Community, Respect, Personal Development, Responsible Stewardship and Integrity” (Student Services Division, 2013) The values that each staff in the Seattle Police Department rears within them help them to balance the agency’s mission to serve the people whole heartedly. These help the agency to safeguard the Americans’ individual liberty and promote a healthy livelihood.
