The Work ExperiencesI strongly believe that some people are fortunate to discern, early on, the profession they want to pursue in life. I affirm that I am one of these people who knew from one’s heart and mind that I have a genuine interest for designs, building systems, and constructing infrastructures of varied styles and forms. As such, when I realized that I could fit all my interests in an architectural engineering degree from the Drexel University, the culmination of my personal and professional goals seemed to have been achieved.
However, as I delved through the bachelor’s degree program, only then did I realize that there are more to learn and to specialize on. This, therefore, provided the impetus for my decision to pursue a master’s degree within the same field of endeavor. The multidimensional approach offered by Drexel University provided the opportunity to develop one’s theoretical framework through specialized course such as Infrastructure Engineering, Linear Engineering Systems, Dynamic Engineering Systems, Statistical Analysis of Engineering Systems, Structural Designs and Structural Analysis, to name a few.
Concurrently, specialized skills in structural designs, solving engineering problems, applying strategies and techniques in architectural engineering practice, were aptly developed. From among the relevant projects that I got to be personally and directly involved in included designing a Lego Mindstorm mobile robot to track course lines; the creation of three shapes of cooling roofs with using different materials; as well as designing 3D blimp and gondola using applications such as Google Skechup and Autodesk Revit.
I am convinced that an architectural engineering course requires students to possess skills which require a lot of patience and discipline; which, I affirm I have a lot of. The number of hours that need to be spent to conceptualize, plan, strategize and implement projects are immense and the success of each project depends largely on the practitioner’s ability to adhere to explicitly stipulated time frames. As such, aside from the identified skills and competencies which were developed through the course modules, I am confident that the course has enabled me to improve on time management skills, problem-solving, decision-making, as well as leadership and management skills.
Particularly, I got to appreciate the value of planning, organizing and controlling various facets of structural designs and project management. I believe that these skills would prove to be beneficial in undertaking my masteral degree. Likewise, my previous work experiences have given me vast opportunities to learn about working in teams; prepare relevant documents for presentations; as well as preparing plans and budgets, as required. The work experiences from two difficult cultures, one from organizations in Shanghai, China; and recently from a prestigious organization in the United States have enabled me to experience diversity in culture and the need to be acclimated to practices that are acceptable to Eastern and Western cultures.
My competencies in speaking fluent Mandarin and English, as a second language is a plus factor in various global organizations; considering that both the United States and China are considered two of the most powerful nations in the world today. I, therefore affirm my genuine intention to pursue a master’s program in architectural engineering to further advance the knowledge and skills gained from my bachelor’s degree. I hope that I would be accorded the privilege to be part of your prestigious university and I am convinced that ours would be a mutually beneficial academic relationship.
