Churchill: Leader and Statesman - Assignment Example

12 November Assignment Sir Winston Churchill was a British politician and a sman extremely well renowned world over for his leadership contributions towards United Kingdom during the course of the Second World War. He has been regarded as one of the greatest wartime leaders with an immense amount of positivism and character which helped him to serve as the Prime Minister of Britain for two periods. He was also the only British Prime Minister to have achieved the Nobel Prize for literature and was also a part of the British Army. As he was a part of many different fields which included being a soldier, a writer, a politician as well as a statesman, he was able to hone his leadership skills and develop them for the future of the country. Moreover, his inherent personality also revealed a risk taking and determined attitude which helped him become the remembered man that he is today. One of his greatest capabilities was to inspire people despite the ominous circumstances that may have loomed in the country at the time. Even during the crucial time of war, Churchill was able to make people realise the need for being positive and fighting in the name of patriotism. He demonstrated streaks of enthusiasm as well as determination in public and the effects of his zeal were felt immediately in all parts of the country. He always preached being positive and did not entertain any kind of negotiation with Hitler. He inspired almost all the citizens that lived in Britain at the time with the help of his stalwart fortitude. When he became the Prime Minister, he was 65 years old however his age did not tie his enthusiasm down because he continued to be extremely energetic at the old age of 65 as well. He had mustered enough experience at the time and was at a spot where he knew exactly what the citizens of the country desired. During the course of his career, he was also subject to a number of faulty decisions and unpopularity however, all of that added on to the experience that he had gained over the years which finally helped him make good judgements. He also possessed excellent communication skills and has been known to be one of the greatest orators of all time. Churchill had a great amount of charisma which attracted people towards him and the principles that he preached. One of the main traits of leadership is to have an excellent personality and make people want to be someone because of the personality that they possess. He had a great amount of confidence when talking to people and was able to win their hearts over and help them understand what was going on politically. He was also a man of great courage and creativity and helped to shape Great Britain up during its darkest hours of being a part of the war that persisted. Churchill has always known to have had strategic foresight because of the various steps that he undertook politically, for example during the aftermath of the Munich Agreement, he complained of the terms that had been set stating that nothing vital was at stake and that the agreement was not propounding the theory of establishing peace in Europe after the War would have ended. In Russia as well, he displayed his heroic intuition as he put to test his declaration about the struggle that English countries and communist regions would soon have. He stated, “Adequate preparation for war is the only guarantee for the preservation of the wealth, natural resources, and territory of the State, and it can only be based upon an understanding, firstly, of the probable dangers that may arise; secondly, of the best general method of meeting them as taught by the principles to be deduced from the events of history; and, thirdly, of the most efficient application of the war material of the era.” One always says that for a great leader to exist it is important to have someone who is able to preach to the masses and be accepted in their eyes. In order for someone to be able to do this, they must believe in what they do and have the same morals and values that they want the world to follow. Winston Churchill was a man full of passion for whatever he wanted to do and his passion for achieving democratic freedom is what instilled excitement and energy within the masses that helped him accept and achieve this.  Perhaps the best example of Churchill’s passion is found in some of the words that he used to inspire people and battle defeatism:  “I am convinced that every man of you would rise up and tear me down from my place if I were for one moment to contemplate parley or surrender.  If this long island story of ours is to last, let it end only when each one of us lies choking in his own blood on the ground.” Despite his achievements, he was frowned down upon by a number of leaders at the time who did not believe that the world could attain democracy. They were not at par with what Churchill was preaching Britain at the time. They were ready to point out his faults with regard to faulty judgements taken because of his intuition; however, Churchill stood ground in what he believed in. As a soldier as well, he displayed his passion as he served on the frontlines against France during the First World War with the 2nd Battalion of Grenadier Guards. He had courage as well as a very steady head on his shoulders. The combination of these two aspects made him choose wisely and take the best decisions that he felt fit for his country and fellow soldiers. He displayed a great amount of fearlessness and leadership when in low ranks as well. He exuded charm and wit among his friends and family and all of this helped to earn him a much loved position among the people. In conclusion, Winston Churchill was truly one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century because of his courage, passion for what he believed in and did, as well as his humility. He had the power to inspire thousands of people and gave rise to some of the best slogans used worldwide today including the ‘v’ for victory. He lived bravely during the course of the two World Wars and his unstoppable personality made him an effective leader as well as true statesman not only for the people of his country but by gaining recognition all over the world.
