Given such circumstances, the best diplomatic mix that the United States can do in dealing with Southeast Asian countries is to strengthen economic ties that will provide needed economic aid to countries; however, the US must ensure that such relationship must be based upon mutual respect and not regional dominance in order to neutralize conflicts (Fitriani n.p.). In addition, it is also important for the United States to demonstrate in the region that it can take the role of a leader in regional unity through the use of a “Forward-Deployed American Diplomacy” (Bower n.p.).

In this type of diplomacy, the United States must take the initiative to strengthen regional geopolitical organizations (such as the ASEAN) and making such organizations a stable mechanism to resolve inter-regional conflicts and issues.
