?November 26, Avery Kallioinen PHIL 2256 0296150 My philosophy of education For coming up with me very own philosophy of education I researched various educational philosophers’, each had some different and interesting insights. My philosophy of education is inspired by my past teachers and the educational system that I have been brought up and taught in, counselors, coaches, and other role models in my life and these education philosophers with their different philosophies’. I take all the positive influences and the positive and effective approaches which were used on me and I keep them in mind try to use them in even a better way so that I could also bring out best from my students. Talking about my beliefs on education and educational system, John Dewey’s philosophy stood closest to it. My educational philosophy follows John Dewey’s concept of education as a tool to have a meaningful life. My philosophy follows his criteria of valuing all students and believing in their in unique intelligences and providing them with an open and fear free environment where they are free to share their ideas. My moral compass is that all students deserve to be treated equally and fairly, without any biasness and no matter what no student should be made to feel stupid as this would also negate the fear free environment then. My engine of ideas is to provide students with tools and a class culture where they can easily uncover their own innate intelligences and this will be done by my past experience in classrooms which would help me create better class surroundings, and letting students use these tools and yes by using the ideas of John Dewey’s of having a meaningful life through education in my class. As I believe we all are smart and every child is intelligent in his own way I could also relate to Jacotot and Ranciere idea of all students being equally intelligent, although do not completely agree with their philosophy of students intelligence which has been derived out of just one book. () I strongly believe with Howard Gardner’s idea that we all posses’ eight intelligences and we can bring out those intelligences and become more creative. These include: Musical Intelligence, Bodily- Kinesthetic Intelligence, Logical-Mathematical Intelligence, Linguistic Intelligence, Spatial Intelligence, Interpersonal intelligence and Intrapersonal Intelligence. We all posses these intelligences but some posses some more by jus merely exercising them more often which makes them more creative, smart, and “intelligent” then others. (Howard Gardner’s: Multiple Intelligences) We all do have equal intelligences it means but some need to practice and polish them more than others. “One could teach what one didn’t know, and a poor and an ignorant father could if he was emancipated, conduct the education of his children, without the aid of any master explicator- “universal teaching” –to learn something and to relate to it all the rest by this principle: all men have equal intelligences” (The Ignorant Schoolmaster: Five Lessons in Intellectual Emancipation- all students are equally intelligent) . A teacher’s duty is to encourage the student to keep trying and not to b afraid if he fails once and not to get tired in this trial as he will succeed as everyone is equally intelligent. In accordance to my knowledge, experience and research education and intelligence are very subjective terms. Educating a student is not only making him memorize facts and get them to spit back logic only, it is far beyond that. It is to give somebody a meaningful life; just like John Dewey’s saying and that is why I can relate to his philosophies. It is to enrich children’s lives, get them to explore and find their place in life, and for them not be afraid to fail encourage them and take chances, to speak and share their opinion their ideas. Change the ideology of failure, as an end, but as a lesson to be learned and not be afraid of it. Same goes for the term intelligence, not necessarily a student with higher score on SAT’s is more intelligent in all aspects but it’s just that he might be stronger than the other one in other seven intelligences or maybe he just needs to exercise these intelligences to get more intelligent. All I think is we need a system that encourages children to do better and in ways they want to and not to force them into what we want , let them grow, let them be creative. A child who seems to make a good engineer in four years just because he is intelligent may fail and take six years and still not pass it because he might have been a good actor instead, acting , at which he was” intelligent” at. . This education system has pushed kids so hard, and made them so scared to fail that some don’t even try, and that to me is not fair. Public education is here for us and for our children and as teachers is it our responsibility to help these kids to succeed! Everyone is creative every child is intelligent in his own way we just need to allow them to explore it and guide them to the right path. Creativity to me is very important, and this is why I follow closely to John Dewey to such a great extent. He states that there are no real fixed boundaries to human creativity that life is a generative gift and education should be there to bring out those gifts. education is here on this earth to enrich children’s lives, get them to explore and find their place in life, and for them not be afraid to fail and take chances I will use unique and creative tactics to teach the lessons of the curriculum I will get, and learn from each class I teach how I can improve and make my class environment better for my students. While my philosophy may not seem like very much now, I am still a young student, and as I go through my teaching career I know I will have to improve over time and that my philosophy will continue to be shaped and formed. As par my philosophy of education should not be restricted to the tangibles of academic achievements but anything that helps to give meaning to life. References Hansen, David T. (ed).
