Whilst individuals hold a key responsibility for personal health status, health care managers closely work with nurses, physicians and other heath professionals to help in the health care delivery process. The Dubai health authority offers a wide range of health services across diverse areas, both in the online and physical domain. Health care services are offered in three major hospitals namely Rashid hospital, Latifa hospital and Dubai hospitals. This paper looks at services provided by Dubai’s Latifa hospital, its organizational chart and management principles that can be used to improve management in the organization. Question 1 Services provided by Latifa hospital Latifa hospital offers tertiary care for neonatal and maternal services entailing neonatal and pediatric surgery. The hospital also offers treatment for metabolic and genetic cases. Latifa hospital possesses a superiorly equipped neonatal intensive care unit as well as a skilled team of health care professionals who offer global levels of maternal and neonatal care. The hospital acts as a referral hospital because it has well equipped and highly sophisticated pediatric surgery unit, fetomaternal services and neonatal intensive care unit. Latifa hospital also offers nutritional services through the clinical nutrition section, which is dedicated to offer high quality nutrition and food services that meets the wants and surpasses the anticipations of clients. Nutrition counseling, education and intervention are proof-based and they thrive to attain best possible nutritional status in outpatients and inpatients. Latifa hospital’s dietitians are greatly trained and function as members of medical teams to make sure that referred children, infants and women gat personalized nutritional care precise to their health needs to assist in management of diseases and optimization of health. The hospital is committed to promotion of health awareness through providing health education counseling to breastfeeding and pregnant women. Additionally, dietitians assist to expand the nutritional knowledge of the general public through offering dietary information to hospital staff as well as groups outside the hospital like community groups, schools, and parents. The Latifa hospital’s rehabilitation section offers inclusive rehabilitative service for obstetric, gynecological and pediatric patients who regularly go to outpatient clinic. Latifa hospital endeavors to be an employer and hospital of choice in the region through fostering a safe and friendly environment and through offering continuous education so as to lead to motivated, innovative and outstanding health care provider. Qn. 2 Latifa hospital’s organizational chart According to Meyer, (2002), an organizational chart refers to a diagram that shows the structure of Latifa hospital in terms of relations among departments or personnel. It also depicts lines of responsibility and authority. The Latifa hospital’s organizational chart is an efficient tool for enabling hospital’s managers in information sharing and planning in planning of duties in the organization. However, the organizational chart has several limitations because it only demonstrates formal relationships and fails to display deeper social relations that emerge when individuals work jointly for a universal outcome. It also does not demonstrate horizontal relationships. Another limitation of the Latifa hospital’s organizational chart is that it charts also does not visibly illustrate the managerial system used in the organization, whether democratic, autocratic or an intermediate system of management. Qn. 3 Solutions for problems in Latifa hospital’s organizational chart The Latifa hospital management can solve its organization chart’s problems by undertaking a span of control analysis to establish the structure of the organization. The span of control will enable the hospital to determine the number of departments and individuals that directly report to a certain manager. Once the management divides work and creates departments, they will then select a span of control and settle on a series of command plan that will point out people who reports to others. The span of control will show social relations in the organization because it will affect work relationships in departments. A wide span is suitable for Latifa hospital because it will result to flat hierarchies, with less levels of management between bottom and top (Shortell, & Kaluzny, 2002). Delegation is important management principle that the hospital can use to determine the management system that the organization will adopt. Through delegation, managers will transfer responsibility and authority to positions that are below them in hierarchy. Majority of today’s organizations encourage the management to delegate power to lowest level to offer utmost flexibility to fulfill the needs of customers and adapt to changing environment. Additionally, delegation results to empowerment, because it offers people the liberty to contribute their ideas and performs their tasks in the best probable manner. Bateman and Zeithaml (2004) argue that this involvement has the capability of increasing job satisfaction for individuals and regularly leads to improved job performance. With lack of delegation, managers perform the entire job themselves and thus underutilize their employees. Latifa hospital can improve its organizational chart through deciding the levels of decision making through centralization and decentralization. Decentralization and centralization pertain to hierarchal level of decision making. Centralization implies that decision power is situated near the peak of the organization. In the case of decentralization, decision power is situated at lower levels of the organization. Latifa hospital should experiment to establish the appropriate hierarchical level of decision making or the level of centralization. Shortell and Kaluzny (1997) note that due to rapid changes within their environment, modern day organizations have turned out to be more complex and several managers deem that decisions require to be made by people closest to problems faced in spite of their level in the organization. Therefore, Latifa hospital managers are required to select the amount of decentralization or centralization that will permit them to effectively and efficiently execute decisions and also accomplish organizational goals. Whatever works in a single organizing will not essentially work in the other organization. Thus Latifa hospital managers should establish the quantity of decentralization for every department or work units. Latifa hospital is highly recognized for its providence of high quality health care. The hospital has experienced managers and skilled staff as well as strong customer services. Provision of seminars and workshops on the significance of healthy living is a key to attraction of customers to the facility. The hospital has endeavored to attract a huge number of staff members particularly the nursing staff which will further strengthen clinical department of Latifa hospital A huge turnover of nurses has greatly affected nursing services at Latifa hospital. As a result of insufficient fianaces numerous planned activities in some departments haven’t been performed. The hospital persists to stand out in its numerous strives due to commitment of members of staff as well as a supportive working atmosphere. These factors provide opportunities spreading out of hospital services particularly in primary health care section. The hospital with human, material and financial resources available would be able to increasingly strengthen communal based interventions. The hospital has not been in a good financial position for the past few years following the global financial crisis and low employee income is a major concern. Even though the Dubai government pays salaries, it doesn’t pay several of benefits. In addition, while employees are dedicated to working in Latifa hospital, the increasing cost of living together with well paying jobs in private hospitals for skilled staff usually requires the organization to give top-ups in order to retain its staff. Therefore, the hospital struggle to meet salary requirements of its employees and there is the actual need for the organization to look for other schemes of sustain the operation of the hospital via monetary generating activities and donors particularly for communal based activities. Conclusion Management is a crucial function in health care organization. Health care managers are required to closely work with nurses and physicians to ensure superior delivery of health care services. As the major provider of maternal and pediatric health care, Latifa hospital uses the organization chart to help both the employee and management to understand how different departments and personnel are connected.
