The smoke can only mean bad news for this completely wooden town although one hopes they have pumps from the lake that might help them contain the blaze. The rider who reported the news indicated the town was destroyed given the amount of smoke and suggested the cause of the fire was dragon breath. We are awaiting more credible sources.

The forest on the other side of the Misty Mountains has puzzled us for years with the strange darkness that has overcome it. There are rumours that the wood elves still live in the forest, mostly continued by the men of Long Lake who insist they have kept up a trade with them. However, the elves no longer dwell in their traditional home and the once well-traveled road is now too dangerous for any but the bravest of travelers to attempt.  Another preposterous rumour holds that the forest is infested with a strange breed of giant spiders, but again there is no evidence to support the claim.

Three large trolls have been discovered turned to stone on a hill just east of Bywater.  If one believes the old sayings that trolls are real, then it would appear that the trolls were caught off guard by the rising of the sun. The trio of stone sculptures has the characters frozen amid a tremendous battle and just turning as if they had realized, just before the light of the sun hit them, the danger they were facing. The artistry is amazing as there is no sign of workmanship, but no one seems to know who the mysterious overnight artist might be.

Neighbours were surprised to discover that one of their more respected citizens has gone missing. Bilbo Baggins is the heir to the great Baggins fortune and has always been a very hospitable and generous host. But the last time Baggins was seen was several weeks ago. One neighbour, Mr Gamgee, said he heard a great party at the Baggins home some time ago and had been a bit put off that he had not been informed of a party, but didn’t think to make much fuss of it. No one seems to know what might have happened to Mr Baggins, although it is well known that he has taken blood in him that may have overcome his more sensible side at last. The Sackville-Baggins are already taking curtain measurements and preparing to take up residence as soon as an appropriate period has passed.
