Client’s 13 July Response for Person I could not agree more, there are several loopholes which need to be fixes as soon as possible, the Adam Smith institute which is deadly against the fair trade policies has time and again brought to light the price distortion which has been taking place for quite some years now. Goods are being sold much above their market price and if this is the case how can this whole thing be called fair trade? It is unfair to sell goods above market price; it is unfair trade rather than fair trade which is taking place these days.
Response for Person 2: You are spot on, fair trade has time and again favored powerful or the wealthier nations rather than trying to restore parity in terms of trade, it is also a known fact that the exchange does not take place in a competitive framework which is again a very big problem which needs to be sorted out soon. It is also known that product differentiation is not taken into account which is another hurdle which needs to be sorted quickly. Response for Person 3: You are absolutely right but there is nothing that can be done about it, when recession was going on, several people got their pink slip and those who were still employed had very little or no options at all.
You have pointed to the fact that it is illegal but there are several other illegal activities which are going on in this world, this does not mean we should not take steps to counter this, it is extremely important to stop the exploitation of employees but there are not too many things that we can do in this regard. Response for Person 4: You have pointed out the economic turmoil which is going on, you have presented the right picture, it is an overly competitive world, employers employ a hire and fire policy these days, but at the same time we must also ensure that we are not being exploited, it is very difficult to come up with the right solution which would prevent the employees from getting exploited.
Part Two: “Some employers are reconsidering the traditional five-days-in-the-office pattern as the national average price for a gallon of gas hovers around $4. The idea is to whittle down commuting costs for workers by allowing them to work from home or switch to four days of 10 hours each.” (Gas Prices Encourage Telecommuting) This is a very fine example of how we should adapt to different situations, we should always act according to the situation, in the above case employees are encouraged to work from home to save gas but it other cases employees may not find themselves in a favorable position.
I think it is fair for an employer to expect an employee to work extra under difficult circumstances, an employee can put in 1-2 hours extra twice or thrice in a week over and above their traditional working week but expecting more than that is both illegal and unethical.
