[Your full June 16, Today's Downsizing Teachers in the America I used Google as my search engine. For my search, I received a few very to-the-point search results. Rest of them was satisfactory. I got actual information regarding number of teachers being downsized in America in the form of news reports, website information, books and some research papers. Regions specific information was readily available like downsizing issue concerning Greek teachers; protests by California teachers; layoff notices being sent to many teachers in different states of US.
, the implications of teacher downsizing; reports about schools that are losing more than 70 percent of their teachers; and, what the department of education is doing about the issue. The search results also showed some personal opinions of common people and some officials, some of whom supported the downsizing while some reported that firing of teachers was not appropriate. As far as academic literature is concerned, I searched the Google books but could not find actual information in satisfactory quantity regarding teacher downsizing in America.
Authors have written books on general downsizing in America with a little bit consideration to teacher downsizing. However, I was able to find some good research papers in which the researchers considered the causes and problems caused by teacher downsizing and discussed the solutions. But again, there were very few researchers who pointed out this specific topic and most of them discussed downsizing in general. In short, I was able to find easily on the internet some good news reports, websites and photos regarding teacher downsizing in America. 2) First source that I studied was a website that contained an article by Andrea Peters.
In her article, she talked about the layoff notices that were being sent to thousands of teachers in America. She discussed the “pink slips” being sent to teachers in California, Illinois, Ney York, Michigan, New Jersey and Oklahoma. She has given exact figure regarding how many teachers were downsized in America in 2010. Her information is accurate enough and she has also discussed Obama’s policy regarding this issue. The article also makes suggestions for the teachers to raise protests against cuts in wages, benefits and allowances.
This article has been published in Greek reporter magazine that is a reliable source available online. The second source I used was a research paper by Goldhaber and Theobald who focused on the implications the downsizing of teachers had on the society. They reported in the paper that the last two years, 2000 teachers were downsized in Washington. They determined what factors contributed in the teachers receiving reduction-in-force notices. They also made recommendations as to how to solve the problem and how to minimize the bad effects the downsizing could imply on the teachers and more generally on the society.
The source contains credible information as the paper has been published by the Center for Education Data & Research, which belongs to the University of Washington Bothell. Also, the data used in this paper is confidential data from Washington State supplied by the Office of Superintendent for Public Instruction (OSPI). So, the source is accurate and reliable.
