Psych 121 Technology and Child Development, Part II: Lessons from Empirical Research (A Summary) In this research article, the researchers examined primary empirical research on the effect of emerging technologies on child development (Koeppl et. al 1). Specifically, the researched tried to answer the following questions: the impact of technology used in educational settings have on child development; on which uses of technology hold the greatest promise for improving child well-being outcomes; and on whether future research is needed to understand the impact of technology on children according to cognitive, social, emotional, and physical perspectives (Koeppl et. al 1).The researchers answered these questions by analyzing data from “19 controlled, primary research studies on using computer or other advanced technologies…to improve positive developmental outcomes for children” (Koeppl et. al 1). In this case, the researchers summarized these 19 research studies, getting a representative sample from each research.
The researchers found out that “Computers and other technologies greatly increase motivation to learn (and teach), and increase the benefits of collaborative work, play, and other learning opportunities” and that “Computers also allow parents, teachers, care providers, and other adults to facilitate the learning and development of important aspects of child well-being” (Koeppl et. al 1). This means that technologies, especially computers, can greatly facilitate and increase opportunities of positive developmental outcomes for children.
In this case, we still need to know how these technologies can be efficiently to produce desired developmental outcomes on children. Works Cited Koeppl, P.
