Running Head: PREVENTING VIOLENCE FROM THEIR VERY SOURCES Preventing Violence From Their Very Sources and Origins, Its Funding Criteria and Evaluation ___________________________ _________________________ PREVENTING VIOLENCE FROM THEIR VERY SOURCES 2 Abstract Preventing the onset of violence is the first step towards thwarting a full blown crime. Averting C and V is a multifaceted concern with the corresponding response whose prevention and solution must be grounded first and foremost in the most basic foundation of society beginning with the family and the community at large in particular and city, state and the nation in general.
In the smaller context of family and community inter-action and violence prevention aspect, Jarvis (2011) offers the suggestion of creating a culture of candor. We are also of the strong belief that violence and crime lead in such condition with consequence so dire as the unquantifiable cost of economy and the more severe loses of human lives. It also causes great disturbance to peace, justice and equity. Violence and crime at its most wicked state presents the gravest and most vile threat to effective governance and weakens the very foundation of a growing society.
It has been the cause of unmitigated fears and feelings of insecurity which are counter productive. We must lick the occurrences of such incidents from its very sources and origins. The committee overseeing the grant and awards for programs to prevent violence and crime offers the initial evaluation and needed criteria as the guiding principles of implementing the program and selecting the beneficiaries for funding from our limited resources. The program goal is to test the effectiveness of a violence prevention model that has a proven track record of efficacy in reducing violence by a community-based initiative. We intend to make one award of not less than $1 Million for a project lasting 4 years from the period September 01, 2011 to August 30, 2015. The amount covers the entire award period with no subsequent additional awards. An example of a program that would likely get the nod of the committee is one that addresses issues beyond race and gender.
Over and above all considerations, the criteria for funding grants starts with eligibility which is limited to public agencies, including state agencies, units of local governments to include federally-recognized Indian tribal governments as determined by the Secretary of the Interior and published in the Federal register, public universities and colleges including tribal institutions of higher education, and private non-profit organizations including faith-based community and tribal organizations.
Taking into serious consideration the scarcity of funds for violence prevention programs, it is just right and fitting to be conscious about programs that do not work. This comes to mind the reminder issued by Blueprints about many programs that, despite their good intentions, are either ineffective or actually do more harm than good. Such request for funding grant may merit a review by the committee but is less likely to get the approval for funding. PREVENTING VIOLENCE FROM THEIR VERY SOURCES 4 References Jarvis, Debra (2011).
