TV Character Evaluation Part I Write a summary of 350-700 words identifying the contributions of Freud, Jung, and Rogers. Sigmund Freud, the fatherof psychoanalysis was many things, however, he is best known for his work on the theory of the unconscious. He believed that our actions are results of our unconscious drives that are derived from our sexual and aggressive instincts. He was the first thinker to apply deterministic principles to mental state in a systemic way. Specifically he was best known as a psychodynamic theorist.
He approached neurotic behavior from a standpoint that can be treated by understanding why the behaviors existed. (IEP Freud, 2010) It was his insistence on understanding the human mind that allowed modern psychology to gain the abilities it has now. And while his approach may have been flawed in some areas, he made it possible to move forward in the field of psychology. Carl Jung is best known for being the founder of analytical psychology. Among his many accomplishments in the field of psychology are his developments of the concepts of extroverted and introverted personality and the collective unconscious.
(Cowgil, 1997) A lingering result of his approach in popular culture is the use of the Jung and Briggs Myers typology test whish tested your personality type based on a series of questions. This approach is used today in many corporate entrance examinations to verify the person’s personality and abilities. Another interesting innovation was his theory regarding symbols and their use in defining and understanding individual human nature. The popular Rorschach Inkblot tests are a result of the influences of Carl Jung’s approach to symbolism in understanding the psychology of the individual.
Carl Rogers is best known for his contributions to client-centered therapy using humanistic approaches. He argued that the therapists should allow the patients to find the solutions for themselves and not the psychologists who could not know every inner detail regardless of externally available information from the patient. According to his theory each person had the inherent ability to grow and change within them. (Hall, 1997) Many modern therapists follow this approach to psychoanalysis in their practices.
His contributions regarding the humanistic approach to psychoanalysis were his most well-known in popular culture. In fact many twelve step programs use his approach in their steps. For instance step one of almost every step based program is admitting one cannot control oneself or ones addictions. Carl Rogers argued that the first step to understanding one’s self and becoming whole again was often the step the individual made in reaching out to a therapist; by default admitting their inability to make the journey on their own.
Television character David Caruso from CSI Miami is undergoing an evaluation from each of the individuals the results may look something like the following. Sigmund Freud’s evaluation summary would likely encompass David Caruso’s past and his relationships with other individuals he was close or not close to. His actions on screen would signify that his interactions with others are generally tainted by his desire to feel superior to them, this likely stems from a lack of nurturing and an increased emphasis on performance over personal attachments.
Carl Jung’s analysis would likely encompass David Caruso’s desire to succeed on an unconscious level which would drive him to potentially discard relationships without evaluating his actions first. Lastly, Carl Rogers evaluation would likely result in many sessions with the potential for David Caruso’s seeing his inability to maintain close relationships while pushing for perfection on a personal level.
