Technology is changing rapidly and so are the people and their lifestyles. Some business ideas that were considered brilliant 2 decades ago are completely obsolete now while completely new ideas are being evolved every day in the present world. However, with this rapid advancement come its drawbacks, one of the biggest of which is the constantly deteriorating social and environmental conditions.
As the population grows and their needs grow even faster, the natural resources are being depleted at the speed of light. Moreover, all other societal and environmental factors are being exhausted very quickly as well. In such a situation, there is a huge responsibility on the shoulders of businesses operating in our environment. (Total Attorny/Scanlan, 2010). They cannot simply leverage the society and its resources without giving anything back in return like old times. This calls for a well-renowned business activity of our times, i.e. Corporate Social Responsibility.
Simply put, corporate social responsibility is nothing but a corporation’s or a business’s way of paying back to the society and/or the environment for what it takes in order to keep itself up and running, although it can never actually repay 100%. (Werther, Chandler, 2010). There are several types of social responsibilities that apply to the present-day businesses. Some major responsibilities would include helping the backward segments of the society move up the ladder by providing educational and professional opportunities, generation of employment, promoting culture, protecting and revitalizing the environment, promote research and development, induce recreational activities, etc.
(Epicor, 2010). However, one of the most important contribution that a business can make in a present day society is the positive implementation of technology for the betterment of the environment and the society, since technology is the fastest growing aspect of the 21st century and is not specific to any field; in fact, it is integrated within anything one can conceive in the modern world. There are various ways in which technology can be implemented to promote social responsibility. Technology makes system faster, more efficient and help yield more using lesser resources.
This helps conserve energy and other valuable natural resources. (Total Attorny/Scanlan, 2010). Technology also increases productivity and therefore helps save valuable time. It also helps in creating new employment opportunities. (Werther, Chandler, 2010). Moreover, technology can uplift the entire standard of living and can transform the entire society making it a better place to live in. here, there are two major social responsibilities of businesses that address directly to business ethics.
(Total Attorny/Scanlan, 2010). Businesses take resources from the society. They take man power and everything else they need from their surroundings. It is their ethical responsibility to give something to the society in return. (De George, 2003). One of the most effective ways of doing that is bringing in newer, more effective and efficient technology, and training the masses about that technology, so that they can independently use it and raise their standard of living. (Epicor, 2010). Another crucial responsibility of the businesses operating in the society is towards the environment, which they are polluting constantly throughout the years, which makes them one of the major contributors of global warming and the major climatic shift in the world.
Technology can play a major role in this regard as well. (Werther, Chandler, 2010). Businesses can implement green-technology to their operations making the systems environment friendly. They can also keep on upgrading their systems with the latest technology utilizing the most efficient means available conserving the resources and protecting the environment as much as possible.
