of Lecturer of 05 February Culture Appropriate There are certain that are not Americans, but whose works would be very good in imparting cultural knowledge to American students. Three Non-American authors shall be selected from the readings to justify the inclusion of their works as a culturally appropriate one. The three authors, whose works shall be analyzed, are Sandra Cisneros, Sherman Alexie and Jhumpa Lahiri. In Woman Hollering Creek, Sarah Cisneros used the ordeal of the protagonist in the hands of her husband to show the problems that some American women face in their marital home.
The story showed the fusion of the American and Mexican culture as the characters, who were of Mexican heritage tried to integrate themselves into the American society. The fact that story focuses on the issue of gender equality from a feminist perspective, the role of women in the society and cultural integration justifies the work as a culturally appropriate one and underlines its importance as a good cultural source for the American literature. It could be seen that Cisneros tried to draw reference from the American society that has women withdrawing themselves from the role that culture assigned to them and make attempt to attain a certain degree of independence.
It also shows the extent at which women struggled against stereotypes and taboos that have a cultural undertone (Perkin & Perkins 2038-2042). What you Pawn I will Redeem by Sherman Alexie shows the journey of the protagonist, Jackson, a Spokane Indian to repossess the powwow regalia of his grandmother. The cultural appropriateness of the Alexie’s work is evident from Jackson’s description of the oppression and violence which is common with indigenous America. The fact that the story tells readers that Jackson linked his past to his future due to his sojourn in search of his family treasure further underlines the importance of the writing as it shows the discovery of a man’s cultural identity.
It shows the cultural difference that exists amongst the Indian tribes. This shows the significance of the writing as a culturally appropriate one (Perkin & Perkins 2064-2069). The Third and Final Continent by Jhumpa Lahiri represents the experience of the Indian-Americans in a positive light. The story shows esteemed readers that different cultures can easily adapt to the American society. It discusses the integration of the Indians into the American society and it is this aspect of cultural integration and adaptation that makes the writing a good inclusion in the American literature.
The interaction of the protagonist, an Indian with the Americans represents another dimension of cultural tolerance as the Americans accepted the Indian culture whole-heartedly and this shows the significance of the writing as a culturally appropriate one (Perkin & Perkins 2081-2083).
