Running Head: MANAGING IN AN INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT: DIVERSITY Managing In An Inclusive Environment: Diversity Submitted by: XXXXXXX Number: XXXXXX Tutor’s Name: XXXXXX Date of Submission: XX – XX – 2011 University of XXXXXX United Services Automobile Association (USAA) was developed back in 1922. The company houses almost 21500 employees. The company has been known for the main aim i.e. providing financial planning assistance to military people and their families. USAA has also been known for the diversity that the company focuses upon.
It is clear from the statement by the CEO Joe Robles Jr. that all employees in the company share the same objective. However the company is made with a combination of several different backgrounds, cultures and diverse workforce. USAA focuses a great deal on dedicating itself to the needs of the members and also on ensuring that a variety of perspectives and beliefs are used in the environment that helps in development of respect and trust. USAA has been very committed to provide a wide range of opportunities to the various diverse groups.
The work place follows an inclusive work environment and as explained by Joe Robles, Jr. “USAA recognizes the strength that comes with a variety of perspectives and beliefs, and an environment that encourages respect and trust. Our ability to attract, develop, and retain a team that is rich in diversity is vital to our association's continued success” (USAA, 2011). Apart from the values and company philosophy, USAA has been recognized to be best employer by LATINA Style for four times. The company has been known for being the best employer for Hispanic women (Business Wire, 2004).
The company works on trying to gain a wide range of diverse employees and this is evident from the statement made by Rosemary Elizalde, Senior Vice President and Senior Financial Officer for USAA Federal Savings Bank, “The foundation of USAA's culture lies in employees with diverse backgrounds, all working toward the same goal -- serving our members” (Business Wire, 2004). It is evident that the company focuses on the needs of the society, not only based on the actual objective of the company but from the diverse work culture that the company has developed.
It is clear that although the company focuses on developing its work force towards the same goal of providing assistance to the military personnel and their families, the company lacks programs for the employees (Brief, 2008). Here it will prove to be very beneficial if the company focuses on developing a few programs or makes a few contributions towards the development of the employees both in terms of skills as well as their well being. Including a few diversity programs and contributions will not only highlight the company’s efforts of being an equal opportunities employer but will also be beneficial for the company as well (Bucher, 2009).
Adopting a diverse work force will allow the company to have a wider range of perspectives and more diverse work force which can help in better overall productivity as well. Hence it is important that United Services Automobile Association (USAA) focuses on discussing and disclosing their diversity attempts and efforts. These will allow the company to also highlight its corporate social responsibility as well (Brief, 2008). On the whole, this will prove to be a win – win situation for both the employers as well as employees likewise.
