Vesely, Dalibor. “Surrealism and the Laten Reality of Dreams.” Art (Prague) 56.04 (2008 325-32. Art. Web. 18 Jan. Vesely argues that interpreting dreams in artwork should not be limited to a single approach. He believes that in order to examine arts like surrealism or Skyrsky’s dreams, we need to consider not only psychological theories about the artist’s background but other factors surrounding the artist’s experience. By considering the artist’s experience, one can discover the depth of the joint meaning of dreams through interpreting surrealistic arts along with Skyrsky’s dreams.

This journal article is relevant to my essay because even though it does not examine a specific art work that I am going to address, it demonstrates a profound way of examining dreams in art. Freud, Sigmund. The Interpretation of Dreams. New York: Oxford University Press, 1999. Print. In his book, Freud Sigmund argues that dreams express one’s desires. According to Freud, when one is conscious, unfulfilled desires are controlled by Spereo. Spereo is the censor that activates awareness of desires and enforces morality.

Spereo lowers our guard to those desires in dreams so that we are able to see and act them out while we are dreaming. This book is useful to my study because Freud’s theory has influenced many artists and his idea overlaps Michael Gondry’s approach to dreams in the movie, The Science of Sleep. I believe that this work will help me to interpret the movie for my essay. Bohn, Willard. "Surrealism." New Dictionary of the History of Ideas. 2005. Encyclopedia.com. 15 Jan. 2011 This encyclopedia text provides the history and ideology of surrealism which is divided into four parts; beginning of the movement, marvelous encounter, later development, and the movement’s reception.

Surrealism is one of the artistic and literary movements that arose in the twentieth century. It is based upon Sigmund Freud’s The Interpretation of Dream and its methods portray dreamlike and hallucinated worlds that are not controlled by our consciousness. The text introduces the typical surrealism artwork of Salvador Dali. It explains how Dali and others who painted in this genre interpreted dreams through art. This information is useful for my essay because surrealism in the historical context of the dream in art allows me to look at dreams portrayed in other works of art. Peter.B Frishman, “The Science of Sleep.

” Peterfrishman, 2006. Web. Jan 15 2011. Peter.B Frishman suggests that the movie, The Science of Sleep, succeeds in making dreamlike film. According to the author, dreamy movies are used to deal with nightmares and generally contain dark subject matter. However, Gondry visualizes the idea of common dreams and connects the scenes between the subconscious and unconscious processes of the protagonist smoothly without CGI effect. This review will help me to examine the movie because it evaluates the movie in cinematic terms.

I believe that it will give depth to my analysis of the movie. Tousley, Nancy. "Scenes from The House Dream: David Hoffos Presents Phase Two of a Large, Ongoing Work." Calgary Herald, May 01, 2004. 15 Jan. 2011  This newspaper article introduces David Hoffos and the motif of his upcoming exhibition, Scenes from the House Dream. Hoffos is a Canadian artist who likes to portray house dream scenes because they are common in dreams. Tousley introduces effects and techniques that Hoffos uses to create dreamlike scenes and explains what he tried to portray by examining each of the art works of his exhibition.

I think the article is useful because it touches upon a specific work of art that I am going to address and will give me insight into the artwork from the artist’s point of view.
