This is based on highlighting competencies with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Councils Competency Standards through explanation of the standard and presentation of evidence in practice. The evidence which this document contains is based on clinical experiences in Australia during my nursing course. Competency 1 Practises in accordance with legislation affecting nursing practice and health care Statement of Justification The nurse should comply with the relevant common laws and legislation. They should be able to identify legislation which governs nursing practice and describe nursing practice within the requirements of common law and adhere to the legal requirements for medication. They should fulfil the duty of care by performing nursing interventions in accordance with standards of practice which are recognized. They should also be able to recognise and respond appropriately to unprofessional and unsafe practice by identifying interventions preventing the care being given provided or laws which are being contravened. Evidence Clinical compliance with all legislative demonstrated under supervision Appendix 1- Student Clinical Appraisal – Assessment of Medication Administration: IV Medication, Oral, SC (Heparin) and SC (Insulin) Competency 2 Practises within a professional and ethical nursing framework Statement of Justification Being able to practice in accordance with the nursing profession’s codes of ethics and conduct means that nurses should accept all patients regardless of their race, religion, culture, gender, age, sexual preference and mental and physical state. They should also integrate organisational policies and guidelines with professional standards. They should be able to practise in a way which acknowledges the dignity, values, cultures, rights and beliefs of their patients. They should be advocates for their patients and their rights for nursing and health care within the structure and management of an organization. Nurses should be able to understand and practise within their own scope of practice, seeking clarification whenever they have questions, directions and decisions when these are unclear or not understood. They should integrate nursing and healthcare knowledge attitudes and skills so as to provide effective and safe care for their patients. Importantly, they should be able to recognize the differences in responsibility and accountability between the nurses who are either, registered, enrolled and unlicensed care workers. Evidence Ethical nursing practice was carried out under supervision to ensure that my practice was in accordance with the relevant ethical codes and conduct. This was to ensure I did not impose my own beliefs on others while at the same time ensuring that I provided care to those from faiths differing from my own. Appendix 2 – Professional Development: Competency 3 Participates within an evidence-based framework Statement of Justification Being able to acknowledge that research plays an important role in the improvement of the health outcomes of individuals and groups alike is important. They should use the best evidence, nursing expertise available to them and respect for the values and beliefs of the people in the provision of nursing care. Being able to demonstrate analytical skills in the accessing and evaluating of health information and research evidence is important as it demonstrates an understanding of the registered nurse role in contributing to nursing research. The nurse needs to contribute to nursing and health care research by participating in research and identifying problems which are suitable for research. They should be able to participate in quality improvement activities as they recognise that it involves ongoing consideration, use and review of practice in relation to the outcome of practice, standards and guidelines as well as new developments. Evidence My use of evidence-based practice was demonstrated under supervision which was an indication of my analytical skills in assessment of information on health and research, my participation in activities for quality improvement and seeking feedback on how to improve the quality of care I provided. I sought feedback during clinical practice and utilised it, standards and guidelines to evaluate personal performance. Systematic reviews are important in enabling the making of objective assessments of evidences and outcomes of specific interventions. Competence is about gaining experience in a context which is similar over a period of time. Nursing being a regulated profession which has its principle purpose being protecting the safety and health members of public through the provision of mechanisms which ensure that there are competent and qualified health practitioners. Authorities which are responsible for regulation of the national standards which assure the competence of practitioners are accountable for ensuring that the societal expectations of safe practices are met. Evidence I have demonstrated my ability to collaborate and communicate with my colleagues, patients and their family members to formulate complete assessment of the patients. At the same time, being able to identify expected and agreed individual or group health outcomes including a time frame for achievement is important. It is important to document a plan of care to achieve outcomes which are expected. Another important aspect is the ability to plan for continuity of care so as to achieve the outcomes which are expected. Evidence This was through the use of individual and group assessments, time frameworks for the treatment and establishment of evidence based short and long term goals. Appendix 2 - Professional Development: Academic transcript, Reports forms Competency 7 Provides comprehensive, safe and effective evidence-based nursing care to achieve identified individual/group health outcomes Statement of Justification This is done by effectively managing the nursing care of individuals or groups, providing nursing care according to the documented care and treatment plan. They are also able to communicate their nursing assessments and decisions to the interdisciplinary health care team and other relevant service providers. They should be able to facilitate coordination of care in order to achieve agreed health outcomes and collaborate with the healthcare team to facilitate the development of policy and guidelines. Evidence During my clinical practice, I was able to demonstrate my ability to communicate with members of interdisciplinary teams so as to facilitate the provision of proper care. I achieved this through the participation in activities involving the health team. Appendix 2 – Professional Development Report from: Inverell District Hospital, Coffs Harbour Base Hospital, Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital, Armidale Rural Referral Hospital, Hunter Valley Community Mental Health, McMaugh Gardens Gap Analysis I have a noticeable knowledge gap in maternity, obstetrics and gynaecology. I will be practicing in countries where care is differentiated for both genders and is dictated upon by culture and religion. This means that I am not likely to encounter any female patients during the carrying out of my duties. I have however gained sufficient knowledge to help me with any medical problems which are gender based should they arise in an emergency situation during the course of my profession. Career Goals & Professional Development Plan Core Qualities of Nursing After completion of the Bachelor of nursing I will have new insights in the practice of nursing, particularity form a western perspective which is somewhat different to that in Saudi Arabia. The skills in cultural competency are an example of the differing practice behaviours in the clinical setting. It is my intention to try to bring some of the skills sets that I have obtained into my clinical practice in Saudi Arabia and through example and knowledge sharing I hope to impart some of the best practice that I have observes and undertaken during my clinical placements. Some of the skills that I would like to share with my co-works in Saudi Arabia are that will improve the core qualities of nursing practice particularly: 1) Community health practice, mostly absent in Saudi Arabia; 2) The approach taken to mental health care. (Re. King Abdulaziz University, 2012) Career Goals I have a focus on increasing my administrative skill set in order to move into higher positions in nursing administration in Saudi Arabia. In order to achieve this I will be seeking a second scholarship from my government to undertake a management degree in the future after I have gained insights through clinical practice in my management shortcomings. Objective 2014-2016 Return to Practice in Saudi Arabia- Current position on study leave. This will be archived through returning to the Hospital from which I currently have leave to study in Australia. I will be returning to the nursing office, an administrative role of with the intention of understanding the skill set that I need to develop to advance in the administrative system. 2016 Further Educational Development At present there is no clear indication on the exact nature of the study that will be undertaken; however a Masters of Nursing in health management is the goal. The institution will be highly dependent on the government scholarship availability (Higher Education Saudi Arabia, 2012). Practice Management I intend to return to my current position from which I am on leave at the Hospital administrative wing. From there I intend to generate plans for the investigation into the provision of community care outreach programmes.
