Effective Communication in Nursing - Essay Example

            According to Nicotera, M. A. et al., there is an urgent need to have all nurses go through interventions to aid them in becoming better at communicating. In the article ‘Communication that builds teams’, Nicotera is quick to point out that everyone is well aware of the fact that there is a need for communication. Unfortunately, there are not many intercessions that assist in improving it. According to the authors, poor communication leads to the provision of poor-quality of work. It is high time healthcare institutions take charge and intervene to assist all nurses to gain the proper knowledge with regard to communication. The structuration divergence theory has been the main issue that points to the fact that organizational factors may hinder effective work ethics and communication. Nurse training can help subvert this emerging issue and assist nurses to create an environment that is conducive for everyone (Nicotera, Mahon & Wright, 2014).

            In another article, ‘Improving situation awareness and patient outcomes through interdisciplinary rounding and structured communication’, the issue of communication among staff in the hospital setting is mentioned. According to the authors, communication is problematic in the sense that the hierarchical setting may pose challenges in the communication channels that exist, which prevents effective patient care. Interdisciplinary rounding has been mentioned as a way in which nurses can learn new ways to address the issues of communication barriers while trying to avoid reverting back to ways that may hinder proper patient care. Structured communication allows for the creation of time to communicate among nurses, which then allows awareness on the part of each nurse (Cornell et al., 2014).

            In the third article ‘Effective communication’ by Casey A. and Wallis A., effective communication is discussed where appropriate methods are identified that assist nurses conduct their operations without hitches. The sharing of information that is accurate, acceptable, and accessible should be provided so as to meet the needs of both parties. Managing complaints and information handover are just but a few of the mentioned aspects of communication. They provide an avenue for all parties to have a formal relationship when it comes to their tasks and responsibilities that aids in protecting everybody involved. Communication seems to have a tremendous impact on patient outcomes, which means that difficulties result in negative patient outcomes. Measuring these aspects is a proper way in which nurses can have an avenue to address some of their issues, thus; providing efficient care to patients (Casey & Wallis, 2011).

            In conclusion, the facts brought out by the articles present an avenue for nurses to gain a few tips on how to approach each other and the patients in their care. The validity of the articles cannot be questioned since the authors are respectable members of the different organizations which they represent, and are familiar with what they sought to present to the public. Also, the studies and research carried out provide proof that all evidence brought out is true depending on the time recorded. As a nurse, this information provides insight into how I can treat both my colleagues and patients in order to attain maximum results. This might guide me in fulfilling my quest to be the best in what I do, for all the right reasons.
