Out Line for Nursing Course Assignment 3 Courses in nursing are developed to equip learners with the knowledge and skills necessary for continuing a career as a professional nurse. Unlike, the traditional nursing institutes offering nursing courses, distance education has more advantages for a learner. For instance, working nurses can also opt for the course in order to enhance their skills and be able to perform better on their career. This course will be helpful to those who are willing to learn and take critique positively. The course will offer the students prolific experience and knowledge that they will be able to implement in the real nurse- patient encounters. The proceeding text enlightens the interested candidates about the objectives of the course along with how the students will work, what will be expected of them, and how will they be assessed (Excite Education, 2001). Course Description “Tell me, and I will forget. Show me, and I may remember. Involve me, and I will understand.” — Chinese Proverb The proverb mentioned above, sometimes accredited to Confucius, encapsulates a core constituent of educating and training nurses: the utilization of simulation labs during clinical rotation. Previously, the nursing students had were expected to implement their book knowledge directly on to a human, during those times they had no “Sim Man” to practice on. This built a great deal of pressure on the student since the students had to perform well under the supervision of the doctor or other supervisors; it also meant that one mistake on their part and the patient they are dealing with can be harmed. Nevertheless, simulation nursing allows the individual students to apply their text book knowledge without pressure building. It allows the user to practice their knowledge and to perform better with confidence (Clavreul, 2012). The course has been thoughtfully designed and is functional for all nursing students who have lucratively completed their Level III requirements. In other words, all Level IV, Level V, APO, or RN-MSN nursing students are entitled. Any non-nursing students interested in learning about nursing simulation are advised to communicate with the instructor as well. Enrollment for the course is limited to 20 students in order to keep this course to a controllable size. The academic health science centre UCL Partners, which comprises more than 30 NHS organisations and education bodies, is establishing the course (Nursing Nimes, 2012). Learning objectives The objective behind designing a course is to educate nurses and also train them before they step in to the field and start practicing in the nursing career. It is also aimed at building the confidence and release the student from the pressure that was built previously. The students will be more confident while working in the real situations after they have worked with the created scenarios. Since, the course offers training as well the nurses will be more competent in their work. That is the course will aim at providing the nurses with the capability of dealing with situations in the real work environment after practicing upon the dummies (Galloway, 2009). Nevertheless, there is a possibility that students may feel confident while working with the dummies but may feel lost when they come across a real environment. In order to curb this problem the course has developed certain activities that will overcome such short comings in the course. Another objective of the course is to polish the nurses while taking care of the patients. In order to fulfill this objective nurses will be taught how to pass the information to the patient in terms of its progress. Usually nurses are well skilled when it comes to technicalities of their job. But when the nurse is to deliver of communicate a certain information they falter behind (Galloway, 2009). Moreover, the objective of the course also involves the process of briefing and debriefing the patients or the attendants of the patient. This will further help in maintaining the personality and image of the nurses as well as the hospital they work (Galloway, 2009). This course has been established to enhance Student Learning. The overall goal for the course is to develop a skill set for students that would provide a prospect for the development of critical thinking, decision-making, and skills to set priorities for larger number of students. The expansion of a professional skills laboratory, the acquirement of a Human Patient Simulator, additional equipment for the skills lab, and the development of simulated patient case studies provide alternative and varied clinical learning experiences for students who will enroll for the course (Saint Francis Medical Center, 2012). Learning activities The learning activities will include a number of set up or staged issues where the students chosen to perform the nursing activities will be expected to apply their knowledge that they have gained from the textbook and literature hand down in the class. The activities that will be involved will be the following: 1. The division of class: the class will be divided in to small groups of two to three students each. Roles will be given to the students such as a nurse and a patient. Each week the roles will be switched between the students. In this activity, the students will be expected to play their role at best and they will be marked on performance as a nurse. That is the role of a nurse will be evaluated on the bases of the dealing of the patient, the confidence level will also be observed along with the mistakes if any. 2. Another activity will be exchange the patient nursing dealings with different groups in order to learn and know the tact to figure out the problems or short comings that they face as a student. 3. The students will have to hand in a report well-researched report and their understanding of the course. This will help the university to improve and to make alterations introductions to the course in order to provide young students with a better course and curriculum. 4. Moot for debriefing and briefing a patient: this activity will be video taped and handed in to the professor. 5. There will be an online board or a forum where the articles relevant to the course can be shared and discussed. The professor will check this forum weekly in order to see the progress of the students and to access their knowledge. The address to the forum will be provided in the class on the first day. These activities will instill in the students the confidence and encouragement to pursue their field with great competency. It will also condition the students to develop a sense of evaluating the work of others in their field in order to stay ahead and also teach those around them so as to overcome the problems if any that may existed among the coworkers. Students will have an opportunity to look at one situation from different perspectives and learn from each other in the classroom. Assessments The assessment of the students will start the moment they enroll for the course and attend their first class. The assessment will comprise of the following: Classes quizzes Class participation Written assessment Report writing Preparing reports for the patients Class Quiz Class quiz will take place in every class in order for the students to retain the lectures that they have attended so far. This keep every detail on finger tips to decrease or eliminate negligence in the students. Class Participation Class participation will be marked and observed by the professor. Class participation will we evaluated during practices. The more the student studies the better able they are to critically analyze the work of fellow students and contribute to it positively. Written Assessments Written assessments will be based on the handouts provided in the class along with the suggested material by the professor. A proper assessment will be carried at the mid and end of the course. This will enable to students to retain the facts and the observations. It will also show the students and the professor alike if they are eligible and the their term progress will be reflected in the marks given. Report writing Report writing will be a detailed process where the nurses will chose one topic taking a case that is genuine or made up and will write a dairy along with their duties and they way they performed it. The report will be assessed on the bases of the reality and the way the pseudo or real patient was dealt with. This report will also include the reflections and the opinion of the student. Preparing reports for the patients These reports will be under process the moment the roles will be assigned. Those students who are given the role of a nurse will prepare a report of the patient. The students will be judged upon how accurately and critically the report was developed and is it applicable in the real world of patients. These reports will also include the video tapped moot of the patient-nurse interaction. Thus, the above designed course is to built a better nurse and to provide the students with a course that will instill in them the confidence that is required for a nurse while dealing a with a patient. It is an opportunity for the students to learn with the help of interaction with other students in the class. This will also provide the students with the advantage of developing a proper knowledge of the course. However, it is important to mention that students who are serious with developing a career and are looking forward to learn will only be able to develop the promised skills in the course. Therefore, the students who plan to join the course must be persistent and patient; for there will be a lot of self-study involved. Going online and reading articles that will be suggested in the class as well studying articles that are relevant in the course. If students will share their articles in the class, their gesture will be considered as class participation. Although, there will be no negative marking if the articles and knowledge is not shared in the class. Reference List Clavreul, G. (2012). What is the Role of Simulation in Nursing Education?
