Analysis The video by Eminem featuring Rihanna, “The Monster” portrays a desperate dismal, as well as, a lonely room that Eminem watches scenes from his previous clips that depict themes of excessive fame, violence and addiction. He started his career singing about how he has come famous in the music industry. Therefore, he sees himself as stepping on a perpetual downfall as a person regarding to the tiredness that he gets from the monster, that he has is now. The song depicts the relationship between Eminem and the monster inside his head. In the chorus of the song Rihanna refers the monster as the voice under Eminem’s bed. Though the presence of the monster in the song appears to be devilish, it affords Eminem’s dialect in the song to expose his desire for fame in his rap talent and music. Such an aspect has enabled him get substantial attention for his lyrics. “I wanted the fame, but not the cover of Newsweek… Fame made me a balloon cuz’ my ego inflated” (Line 1 & 6) It can be seen that in the current music and video industries survives and thrives off from ego inflation. Different artists have been controlled and transformed through praise, recognition and acceptance for what is revealed to be the sheer talent in the Monster song. Eminem story as depicted in the song is of no difference to this. He repeatedly identifies himself to be the Monster. He even uses the reminder of his relationship with the Monster in the chorus to allude to how effectively his ego has inflated, as well as, how tormenting it can to deal with his fame at times. “…I think I’m getting so huge I need a shrink. I’m beginning to lose sleep; one sheep, two sheep. Going cuckoo and cooky as Kool Keith…” (Line 13-15). The lyrics depict the theme of egoism and fame that makes artists thrive in the music industry. Meanwhile the monster under the bed as portrayed in the song depicts the inner voice that drives the artists in their singing. Though, it is devilish it is like a hidden power that makes an artist unique from others. It is a fact that every human being will enjoy recognition, the key source of happiness for different artists as it determines their survival that their ego develops. Once a person is established well, this ego conflicts with the natural occurring minds, therefore, delineate between the two distinct voices that are portrayed in the song. “To intervene between me and this monster… And save me from myself and all this conflict” (Line 28 & 29). Everyone knows how treacherous it may be in overwhelming the single-mind based voices. Therefore, it can be tricky and disturbing in sleeping as a minor ailment amongst a two or many voice environment as portrayed by Eminem. In the second verse, Eminem alludes to the dual voice reality through changing his voice to that of a darker presence “…Sometimes I wonder where these thoughts spawn from. Yeah, pondering’ll do you wonders. No wonder you’re losing your mind, the way it wanders” (Line 21 & 22). Such an aspect is intentional with Eminem alternating the voices and is quite resembalant of how human mind often interjects and works. Eminem’s questioning as to where these thoughts spawn from depicts alter ego as the only possible source. The main audience for this video entails the regular pop fans in the music industry. The Monster song uses a critical rhetoric constructs and dialect to deliver Eminem’s message to his fame resulting from his alter ego. In a way it assures his fans that he will retain in the music industry for them to enjoy his music, the power of the monster. First, he uses pathos effectively in communicating his verses. Pathos is poetic construct that evoke an intentional emotion. The use of the monster under his bed evokes the frightening aspect of the audience. The unknown and the mysterious figure draw the minds of the audience. The audience creates different images and interpretations of the monster in his lyrics. Additionally, these images invoke intentional immense fear, allowing him to expertly integrate pathos. Therefore, it not only induces fear, but also feels his words down his lyrics. Pathos in such a case allows effective connectivity between the artist and audience in strengthening the devilish emotions as he raps. Eminem has used ethos effectively at the very beginning of the video when flashing back via several of his famous clips and the stigmatized images defining his career. His audience have previously connected to him through such aspects. Therefore, this introductory part use ethos as a quick refresher to the audience in which he establishes his credibility. Such a credibility created here demands the authority to his audience to fully immerse themselves in decoding his message, “The Monster.” Lastly, Eminem uses logos critically to draw all the audience attention. “Wanted to be left alone in public. Excuse me” (Line 4). In this plead, he describes the desire to be the public figure in the music industry not to be bothered or followed by stalkers, therefore, drawing logos. Such a construct supports his argument that otherwise would have been considered common. Sarcastically, he excuses himself for wanting the publicity and fame to be upheld in his life. These aspects provide credibility as to why Eminem perpetually writes his music. Works Cited Eminem, , Skylar Grey, Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, and Nate Ruess. “The Monster” , 2013. Sound recording.
