Music course at the University of California 1. I would like to take up Music as my major for further studies. I am confident that the course at the University of California would enhance my musical career by providing the right atmosphere to hone up my abilities in the filed and by exposing me to the contemporary developments in it. I believe I am blessed with the strong passion and dedication needed evolve as an expert musician, which I hope will be facilitated by the systematic acquisition of the various skills associated with it. A regular course in the university is apt to provide the right ambience for that and also the opportunity to meet like-minded fellow students and well-experienced teachers with divergent musical experiences and perspectives. I have taken care to focus on music from my childhood years. I have gained sufficient experience in handling different varieties of music and playing various musical instruments. My family has supported me a lot in identifying my musical aptitude and providing every possible opportunity to nurture it. All through my school years, I had shown my consistent interest in music and have participated in many programmes that gave me a chance to demonstrate my talents. I have been taking music classes in a college for one and half years. And I have had a music band in America for two years. I would also like to bring to your notice that I had been working at a jazz bar in my country as a pianist and guitarist. I play piano, guitar, bass and drums. I have made use of all this real-life experience to develop new skills and polish my abilities. I had been able to cope with the frequent demands at the jazz bar with great versatility. I had also learnt a lot from my experiences the need to maintain mutual respect and concern among the band members and to develop as part of a team and retaining one’s individual talents and identity at the same time. Though I have taken classes to learn the various musical instruments I play, my broad interest in different musical genres have also contributed towards the expertise that I have gained. I believe in the power of music that emerges through group efforts. Therefore, I had always been in the company of those who are passionately involved with music. The different experiences that we have had with music had been a binding force among us, and it eventually led to the formation of the jazz band. The suggestions and criticism from my colleagues have motivated me to strive for a better quality of playing the musical instruments, and I believe that I have achieved that goal with the help of constant training and practice. Now I can claim that I have reached the level of versatility that is expected of a seasoned band player, but am aware that music is an art form which calls for an innovative spirit which is willing to keep learning more and more. This explains my interest in a systematic learning of music as a major in a well-reputed university. Though I have specialized in various musical instruments, I would like to explore the possibilities of learning more related instruments with dedication. However, my ambition is not just to master as many musical instruments as possible, but to enhance my existing level of competence with the knowledge in related fields. My ultimate aim is to focus on a specific musical instrument and to excel in playing that. Along with that, I would like to pursue my ambitions in music composing, which I have already done to some extent in relation to my jazz band performances. I would like to maintain my innovative spirit and achieve the quality and competence needed to pursue my career as an original player and composer of music. 2. I am fortunate that I had gone through different life experiences that have shaped me as a well-balanced, compassionate human being. I have experienced the ups and down of life through the various jobs that I had done in my country. I have worked as a waiter, a supermarket employee, a dealer in a casino and of course, as a performer in a jazz bar. All the seemingly unrelated experiences of these jobs have in fact helped me gain confidence in me as a musician who can relate to the complex needs of human beings from all walks of life. I had been successful in interacting with the people I came across during my jobs, and this has helped me understand their needs and expectations from various art forms. I had been a good listener and have gathered vital information from my conversations with people on the general responses to art forms. I had been able to understand the reasons for particular tastes in classical and popular music forms. My valuable experience in the jazz bar had given me the right amount of exposure to the real-life needs of music among the eclectic audience we used to have. I would like to bring my life experiences to the university and to develop an interactive music culture. My greatest contribution to the university would definitely be my cultural existence, enriched with rare experiences. I would like to maintain an open mind towards those who represent different cultures and learn at least a few good aspects of their musical abilities. I assume that the teachers in the university are experts in the field and represent different musical genres. I would like to make the most of their expertise and experience and evolve as a better musician under their guidance. I would like to be a part of a student community deeply involved in learning and promoting good music. I have understood music to have a therapeutic effect on the universe. In that sense, I would like to take part in using music as an art form that heals people, and the nature of the various break downs resultant of the changing world order. My dream is to make use of the serene qualities of music to bind people and communities together, and to nurture a peaceful co-existence. I realize that the power of an artist is equivalent to, if not better than, the power of a politician. I would wholeheartedly contribute towards the formation of a musical community that would enhance this vision and promote peace and unity among people through good music. I hope to find myself among a good lot of like-minded people from the teachers and student community in the University of California, which is reputed for the high quality of educational standards and social commitment. I promise to be a diligent student dedicated to the course work and committed to my long-term professional goals if I am selected for the course with music as a major in the university. Read More
