The demand for labor in the health centers has been seen to surpass the supply of services which are being offered. Many health care centers are understaffed and have often found themselves short of nurses and support staff. This is where the problem arises. The issue of labor shortage is controversial when considering operations of health centers. Specialized fields in health especially pharmacy, radiology and nursing have been found to be the most wanting positions in these centers. Most problems are cited as being related to cost restraints where hospitals are finding it difficult to have and retain as many health practitioners as is required.
An increase in the number of health facilities has played a major role in downsizing the number of personnel working in them considering their relative scarcity. They have resulted into looking for better ways in which they can recruit multitasking individuals and offer them better pay to increase on the probability of retaining them. Survey findings show that in this year alone, a rise from 23% to 45% in the number of health centers has been witnessed. Clearly, this rate is quite high given that it has only been compared within a period of one year.
Many health centers are looking for better ways in which they can maintain ethics. They have designed pay-for-performance way of maintaining good ethical standards which ensures that they perform well and reap rewards for the services they offer. By far, this method has been embraced increasingly due to the fact that they have to get trained and talented personnel to serve patients. The shortage has also led to the introduction of incentives which are offered on an annual basis. Surveys have shown that many employees are benefitting from these incentives as they work better to gain more at the end of the year as well as gain more rewards within the same period (PBT, 2002).
