“No Arms, No Legs, No Worries.” By Vujicic, Nick. Introduction The video is about Nick Vujicic, who was born with withoutlimbs, and doctors had no medical explanation for his birth “defect.” He uses this phenomenon to inspire thousands of youths around the globe, and this particular video he is talking to children in a school. He starts the video as a very jovial person, greeting the children in the assembly hall. Despite the fact that he has no limbs, his jovial moods is uncompromised. He believes that he is called to testify and touch the hearts of this kids. ‘Pimped’ Wheelchair He describes his wheelchair as “a BMW 7 series,” he even suggest that he should take the wheelchair to be “pimped.” This is supposed to make the wheelchair look fancy and flashy, as it is added some accessories such as spinning metallic wheels on the wheels. He talks with a lot of humor about the wheelchair showing the love he has for this facility; furthermore it is the wheelchair that makes him move around. Nick suggest that the hydraulics system that will be installed in the wheelchair after it is “pimped” will make him bump while crossing the road. He loves his wheelchair very much, and he even say he would find it ‘cool’ if he could play his drums while on the wheelchair. I have no limbs, but I have something else Nick Vujicic explains to the students that he doesn’t have limbs, and nothing happened to him as he was born in that state. There is no medical reason to even explain his situation, but though he has no arms nor legs there is something that he likes about this situation. He says though he has no legs he has his “little chicken drumstick.” He call that part ‘chicken drumstick’ because resembles one and also his dog thinks is one. He explains how his dog thinks it’s a chicken drumstick, and this prompt the dog to come have a bite, but fortunately he manages to chase it away each time. But this does not make him bitter, rather this phenomena makes him better. Every person who meets him wonder what happened to him, and sometimes he jokingly says its cigarette. He has even been described as an alien but some kids, while other kids freak out when they see him. This “chicken drumstick” he has enabled him to do several things such as typing, writing, and even learn sign language as he demonstrates the peace sign. This is very inspiring, despite the fact that he doesn’t have limbs and arms he can do some activities such as swimming that most people blessed with arms and limbs can’t swim. He even gave a demonstration playing some drums perfectly. The students are even shocked that he can kick a tennis ball that far as he demonstrated, the will to soldier on, overcome the challenges that he faces are uncompromised, which shows that disability is not in inability. He likes making fun of his situation Nick Vujicic has realized that most people are freaked when they see him. He has taken this fact to scare some of the people; one is a situation where he narrates chasing a young girl screaming to her that he is going to eat her up. The young kids runs all over screaming for help with a lot of fear. He also narrates a story of how one day on he was in a car, and the car was caught in traffic and a car came close to where their car was. He describes himself that though he has no limbs he is handsome, so he scare the girls that were in the other car by spinning around the car’s chair. While he was demonstrating on how he can kick the tennis ball with his ‘chicken drumstick,’ he moved away from the table close enough to topple off. He went and stood at the edge of the table, which made the student to get frightened as they thought he would fall off. “Hear the heart” In this segment he talks about the daily challenges that one might go through due to a particular condition that one has. People may tease you because you are fat, and this can make someone believe that they are not good enough. Nick Vujicic explains how he was teased, but he says it is a situation that he could do nothing about, “I could not one day wake and say give me arms and legs.” The fact that people put him down made him to be so much depressed, and he questioned his purpose to live, “I’m I here to die.” He realized that there are certain things in one’s life that can’t be changed. He explains that life is a journey, and one has to take each step at a time, but sometimes one might fall. If one falls, he or she has to wake up and continue with the journey. He says that one should never give up, even if it means failing to wake for 100 times because if you give up you will never get back, and so one must keep on trying. Nick Vujicic tells the students that life is about choices, he could have chosen to be angry for not having arms and legs or be thankful for his ‘chicken drumstick.’ He chose the latter, and this enabled him to achieve a lot of things like brushing his teeth, combing his hair and so on. The friends around us influences us so much as he describes, one starts to put his happiness to things that would not last due the type of friends he has around. According to Nick Vujicic it is important for one to know who he/she is, which prompt a person to take the right steps in the right direction. Peer pressure can lure a person to take steps in the wrong direction, and for this reason one should not care about what his/ her friends define him. The need to love oneself Nick encourages the students to love themselves no matter how they are. Everybody is unique and awesome just the way they are. Knowing oneself and showing the public who you really are is important in influencing people to love you back. He addresses the teenagers in the context of their own understanding by giving examples of the things that affect them such as sex, drugs, and alcohol and weight issues. He encourages the girls to love themselves regardless of their weight, by showing them love and appealing to unconditional love, which does not look into the physical being of a person. It has become common for the society to consider the lean bodies as the beautiful ones and therefore, the fat girls consider themselves ugly and has a lot of problems trying to look like other lean girls. Nick’s encouragement about knowing oneself and loving oneself is much focused as it teaches people how to overlook their flaws and consider their worth. Apart from loving oneself, Nick encourages people to love others, not for how they look or what they have, but for who they are. Everybody needs unconditional love, it is important to love a person just because they need love and encouragement. A single encouragement or act of love can be a life saver for a person who has reached life limits for being rejected, teased or traumatized in life. Finding purpose in life Everyone has a purpose in life. When one is faced with pressures of life with friends, family and everybody dictating things which one finds difficult to follow, when there is no one to believe in you, Nick encourages people to follow their hearts. Even when life is full of tribulations, there is always a purpose in one’s life and decisions have to be made. Everyone’s life is worth living when one finds a purpose in life. This does not mean that life is going to be easy to or dreams easy to achieve, but nothing is impossible, and therefore, all dreams are possible to come to reality when one identifies their purpose. When you love your life and see the purpose, then everything is possible. And if the dreams are hard to achieve, there will be something to do that is better than your dream. Even for a Person who has gone through life’s worst tribulations and about to give up, their life has a purpose as they can save another person’s life just by giving them a word of encouragement and that is their great purpose in life. The importance of making choices Everyone has a choice to make on what is important and worth in life. Although there is the freedom of making choices, there are also consequences of such choices. Nick encourages his audience to make informed choices by refuting the cliché that ‘what you do not know won’t hurt you.’ He makes a great connection with his audience by identifying with them. Unlike most of other motivational speakers who would try to convince them about the dangers of sex, drugs and alcohol, he gives an example of a brain tumor to show them that even what they refuse to see will make them suffer later. This is impressive given that teenagers have heard the talk on sex, alcohol and substance abuse so many times, but still they continues to do contrary to what they are warned against. By giving them the power of making informed choices, it makes them get a feeling of maturity that they are responsible for their own actions. The importance of Hope He gives hope to the students by making deep connections with them based on the challenges they face daily. As long as there is a future, Nick says that there is hope and he shows this my assuring them that he loves them and he does not need to be physically present with me in order to remind them that, but with hope, they can imagine that someone loves them unconditionally. He uses his own situation to give the students hope by talking about his wife and his children with a wife he has not yet met, but hopes she is coming soon. When he tells the student to close their eyes and guides them through a venting process, he makes a bridge for the students towards a healing process. The desperate imagery he creates in their mind at this point makes them hopeful that no situation is worse, they are not alone and that they have hope and can always talk to someone when they are in trouble and get help. By appealing to the power of encouragement and love, he instils hope in the students, that even if they do not get the solutions they want for their problems, there are people who will be there to help, as long as there is hope. He is passionate and a great story teller Nick is a very passionate speaker. He seems very interested in the topic he is discussing. Judging from his past life as he narrates and his school life, it is evident he identifies with the problems the students face and the problems that make them give up. His passion can be felt from his intonation as he promises the students that he loves them all. He is very enthusiastic about the topic and it clearly shows in the students too. By telling the students that he doesn’t care about what people think about him as they do not know what he is going through, Nick helps them develop independent thinking capacities. Due to his passion, he does not seem to force his reasoning on the students, he makes a great connection between himself, his speech and his audience as he enjoys the beliefs he is reasoning with his audience to accept. He has great story-telling skills with a sense of humor. All the stories he tells are very connected to the topic and his encourage message. Even when his speech gets emotional for the audience, his humor makes them laugh and tone down the emotions. At the end of the speech, his hugging the students is a great venting opportunity and very inspirational to watch and derive encouragement from.
