He had a consistent passion in literature writing and teaching that he carried even at the brink of his death. He was unsuccessful in the ministry of the First Unitarian Church and Society of Brewster because of molestation scandals. Much of his memoirs were destroyed upon Alger’s wish when he died, and biographers found it difficult to document his life. But he was lucky enough to have the famous Henry Woodsworth Longfellow as one of his mentors early on in his life. He was known to be a prolific writer during his time.

(Meriman, C.D.} Not much is written about his reputation today because of lack of information, but I think, he could be regarded as one of inspirational writers whose writings could be a good material for ministerial evangelization of the church. His theological studies and experiences could very well classify him as an evangelist because he had a fertile imagination enough to occupy numerous books that he wrote. Most of his writings appeal to the goodness of man. His books are still enjoyed by the present generation, as I have enjoyed reading it myself, meaning, Alger still possesses the effectiveness of a writer.

The central ideas of Ragged Dick are life and struggle of someone who had an ambition to succeed. .(Alger, Horatio) The story showed the kindness of Ragged Dick’s heart. The boy in the story showed honesty and ambition that inflicts anyone he encounters. He turns hardened hearts of delinquent youths into something good by his fine principles, but he is one who knows how to fight for his rights when aggrieved as shown in his fights and when he tried to retrieve his lost bankbook. He exhibited many times episodes of bravery, goodness, and truthfulness that earned for him points to become respectable citizen.
