Summary Ragged Dick is a novel created by Horatio Alger, Jr. and in this novel he talks about the experience of a guy who rises from being poor to being a part of the middle class of US in the region of New York during the period of 19th century (Alger 1). This chapter opens with a small commentary made by the author in whom he states that Dick, the protagonist of the story decided to look for a new position while working in the position he was already hired for and he along with his friend Henry Fosdick rented out a place.
During this time it was quite hard for him to find employment as the business environment was quite dull. Dick did not hope to find employment so he decided to remain with his current job but everything changed. The author states that Dick along with his friend went to run an errand for the boss of his friend and decided to take a ferry trip. There they witnessed a boy falling into the sea and Dick decided to help the boy. Dick managed to save the boy from drowning, but the ferry had moved further away.
At the same time, two witnesses went to save both of them. Both Dick and the boy were saved and Dick was taken by the father of the boy to a friend’s place where Dick received clothes as portion of payment of debt owed by the father of the child in return of saving his child’s life. Dick received a letter from the child’s father stating that Dick should call him at his New York’s counting office. Works CitedAlger, Horatio. "An Exciting Adventure."
