Module Recess School recess has attracted a variety of arguments on whether to maintain the already existing ban in the United States or to allow it. Many empirical studies have proved its importance and the trend of reducing it or totally banning it will only hamper of children development among other related issues. The basic argument for recess banning is that students are accorded more time to dedicate to learning. However, this is at the expense of their development and school performance.
This paper explains the need for recess in schools across the United States.Recess is critical for purposes of physical fitness. Recess offers more time for children to play than physical education lessons and thus engage in physical activities. U.S is a nation fighting a heavy battle with obesity both in children and adults. It is ironical that with such a problem, recess has lost meaning and significance. Physical activity during recess improves on cardiovascular fitness, reduces obesity and muscle resilience among others all of which result to a healthy child.
Recess improves on a child’s behavior and classroom performance. Increase in fidgeting is highly associated with lack of recess and vise versa. Children are able to concentrate better after refreshing their minds away from the classroom environment. This increased attention span results in improved performance and better behavior.Recess improves on children’s social skills since they have ample time to interact through play. Social games among them improve on communication, ways of solving minor disputes, anger management and the development of a sportsman attitude.
Recess is, therefore, a vital element in the development of a child. It should be allowed if United States aims at winning the fight against obesity and social ills like violence. Schools will also produce all-round and competent students ready to face the challenging world.
