Extract of sample "Why I Want to Volunteer"

Dedicating a year of my life to volunteer service is something that I hope to do in the near future. I have been blessed in so many ways, and feel a strong desire to contribute to the success and happiness of others. I recognize that people have helped me along the way and as a Christian, I have a great desire to do the same for others. If I could choose to go anywhere and do anything for my mission service, I would travel to The Republic of South Africa. I have read much about this nation tragic history.

Apartheid is now gone, but these beautiful faces many challenges that keep the majority of citizens living in poverty. Just having enough to eat is a challenge for many people living the former homelands and townships of South Africa. I believe that meeting the needs of the body must be accomplished first before the needs of the spirit can be addressed. That is why I would like to work in South Africa as a volunteer that teaches people how to establish urban gardens as a means of becoming self-sufficient.

Urban gardens and community-supported agriculture schemes can do much to alleviate poverty and to foster a sense of community.
