Total Quality Management Location May 13th Total quality management is a set management practice that is geared at ensuring the organization meets and even exceeds the customers’ requirements by focusing of the measurement of processes and controls in order to have continuous improvement. TQM is used by organizations for the purpose of delighting customers (Mishra and Soota 2006. Pg.195). The quality principles are integrated into TQM by the use of data, various strategic approaches, and effective communication in the organization. Organizations, both in the service and product industries, that implement total quality management, lead to operations that are cost effective in terms of both corrective and preventive maintenance, better performance, and the result will be loyal customers who are satisfied.
There are various methodologies that are applied in TQM so that it works and achieves desired results. In addition, for TQM to work there should be a hundred percent commitment from all the people involved in the organization. This commitment includes all persons in the organization, from the top-level managers to the line managers. The managers should understand and be able to harness all the principles applied in TQM. Selling of goods and services that are of high quality to customers are one of the methodologies that are used in TQM and the company should provide a service that is outstanding to the customer.
TQM entails having a detailed process so that the company produces products or services that are satisfactory to the customers. Employees can enhance detailed processes, and they can do so by rejecting unsatisfactory products. Thus, rejecting unsatisfactory products will prevent the end users who are the customers from rejecting the services and products. A company that is implementing TQM should have a steering committee which will be responsible for making projects, project teams, and monitoring of the improvements made by the committee. These teams may be of two types, and will focus on internal and external issues respectively.
Having long term thinking is a methodology that is essential in TQM; this may take up to five years for a company to implement TQM. Long term thinking is implemented by having a yearly review so that it can strengthen the company’s vision. Revision of the company’s mission is also done so that the customer is able to get his/her required needs that also changes from time to time. Even though the mission of the company might change, the overall vision of the TQM usually remains the same.
Moreover, for TQM to be effective, there should be continuous monitoring and management of the process so as to improve on the TQM process and status. Management is able to accept blame when things go wrong when there is monitoring and management. Therefore, with management, company will be able to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the TQM by training the employees and making them involved in the activities of TQM. Frequent audits should also be done, and this will ensure the employees follow the various documented processes.
Employees need empowerment for the process of TQM to be effective; therefore, firms should ensure its employees have effective training. The employees should be trained on various fields such as knowledge of the product, the tools used in TQM and the various systems used in the company. It seeks to maximize the value by providing customers with the exact products they want and eliminating the defects and burdens that can reduce benefits (Rainey D, 2006. Pg. 465). The various tools used in the process of TQM usually focus on the process of measurement and controlling. Improvements measured during the process of implementing TQM so as to know the specific tool that can be used at a specific stage.
