The other article was written by Harrison (2001) entitled “Audiologists and teachers as partners in education” and published in The Hearing Journal emphasized the importance for audiologists to work collaboratively with teachers, parents and speech-language pathologists in the proposing interventions on children who are impaired with hearing problems. The author presented information relative to the children’s educational setting, daily classroom routine, students’ personality, and academic performance, as well as the support services received in the school setting.

Harrison’s findings indicate that “audiologists who actively engage in a productive relationship with their patients’ educators will find (teachers and speech-language pathologists) to be invaluable partners” (Harrison, 2001, p. 60).Summary of Lecture The lecture delivered on October 25, 2011, on Health Practitioner Practice 2 presented initially the definitions of inter-professional practice, inter-professional education and inter-professional learning; as well as expounded on other critical terms within this topic (uni- or intra-professional, multi-professional, multi-disciplinary, teamwork and trans-professional).

The lecture likewise delved into the importance of studying inter-professional practices, as well the benefits accorded by working together. The rationale for the current interest in the subject was also explained due to changing demographics, among others. More importantly, the implications for students were highlighted to enhance the interdisciplinary experience through increased knowledge, skills and abilities in handling the delivery of health services across multi-disciplinary settings (HLTH1306: Health Practitioner Practice 2 2011).

Personal Opinion The readings and lecture notes have actually emphasized the importance of collaborating with other health care practitioners in the delivery of health services to different clients. As emphasized by Timmermans and Mauck (2005), the pitfalls in EMB come in terms of failing to seek information from other health care stakeholders whose professional opinion and diagnoses could significantly affect seeing the health status of patients in totality. This fact was corroborated by Harrison (2001) who acknowledged that a productive relationship between teachers, speech-language pathologists and clinical audiologists for effectively addressing the health needs of hearing-impaired children is magnified.

One agrees with the authors of these readings, as well as the information relayed in the lecture. When one health care professional recognizes the need to seek professional advice and inputs from other health care practitioners whose expert diagnosis of a patient is deemed crucial, neglecting that advice would prove to be futile. In any health care profession, therefore, one must acknowledge that collaborative and participative efforts in seeking improved health benefits for patients are seen to be an instrumental part of the healing process.
