Annotated Bibliography Brandl Bonnie, Dyer, B. Carmel, Heisler, J. Candace, Otto, M. Joanne, Stiegel, A. Lori, & Thomas, W. Randolph. Elder Abuse Detection and Intervention: A Collaborative Approach. New York: Springer Publishing Company LLC, 2007. This book looks at abuse of the elderly comprehensively. Starting from defining elder abuse, the book looks at the immense nature of the problem and detections issues. It then expands to provide possible intervention solutions to reduce the problem of abuse of the elderly.

This article is very relevant to my paper. I will use it to suggest ways and means of curbing the problem of elder abuse. Conrad, J. Kendon, Iris Madelyn, Ridings, W. John, Langley Kate, & Anetzberger. G. J. “Self-report Measure of Psychological Abuse of Older Adults.” Gerontologist. 51.3 (2011): 354-366. Psychological abuse of elderly is seldom reported. The major elements that contribute to psychological abuse of the elderly include verbal assaults, insults, threats, intimidation, humiliation, and harassment.

This article provides a reliable self-assessment measure for use on elderly patient to assess psychological abuse of the elderly. This self-assessment measure is useful to my article. I will use it in the context of preventive measures for elderly abuse in nursing homes. Hobbs, Frank. “The Elderly Population.” U.S. Census Bureau. . (6 October 2011). Hobbs article put up by the U.S. Census Bureau provides authentic data on the growing elderly population in the U.S. The data shows that the elderly population in the U.S. is growing at a faster rate than the general population.

This data is relevant to my paper, as it authenticates the importance of issues relating to the elderly population in USA. Leland, John. “Helping Elderly Leave Nursing Homes for a Home.” The New York Times. September 2009. . (6 October 2011). Leland’s article pertains to the not too happy experiences of the elderly in nursing homes, causing them to seek as early an exit from nursing home environments. Key drawbacks are the loss of freedom in activities and the loneliness of the environment.

I find this article relevant to my paper, which attempts to demonstrate that nursing homes are not always a preferred option for the care of the elderly. I will use the contents of this article to reinforce this opinion. “Living Old: Interviews William Coch, M.D.” Frontline. February 2006. . (6 October 2011).Dr. William Coch has worked as a gerontologist and general practitioner in the rural community of Andover, New York. In this interview Dr. William Coch paints a vivid picture of care of the elderly in nursing homes in comparison to their care within their families and in their communities.

Care for the elderly within their families is the best option. The aspect of care within the family being superior to care received within nursing homes is pertinent to my paper. I will use it to remove any impression that care of the elderly in nursing homes is a better option. “Nursing Home Violations Found to be Common”. Nursing Home Abuse News. October 2008. . (6 October 2011). This article from Nursing Home Abuse demonstrates that abuse of the elderly is a common occurrence in nursing homes.

In addition, it describes the various types of elderly abuse that occurs in nursing homes. I will use this article in my paper to strengthen the argument that nursing homes should not be the preferred option for the care of the elderly.“Preventing the Abuse of Elders.” National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse. 2008. . (6 October 2011). National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (NCPEA) gives data on the prevalence of abuse of the elderly. It also brings out the fact that there is a high proportion of non-reporting of abuse of the elderly.

My paper deals with abuse of the elderly. Therefore, this article is relevant to my paper. I will use this article in my paper to provide figures on the prevalence of abuse of the elderly.Fryling Tina, Summers, Randall, & Hoffman, Allan. “Elder Abuse: Definition and Scope of the Problem”. Elder Abuse: A Public Health Perspective. Eds. Randall W. Summers & Allan M Hoffman. Washington, DC: American Public Health Association, 2006. 5-18.In this article the authors define “elder abuse”. They then expand into providing the nature and extent of the problem of abuse of the elderly.

Through the nature and extent of the problem, they justify concern for it. This article is relevant to my paper on abuse of the elderly in nursing homes. I will use it to highlight the problem of “elder abuse”, with emphasis on nursing home environments.
